My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt)

My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - March 27, 2013 11:52 pm UTC

ITS FINALLY DONE!!!...

I should be getting the motor from Rainbow Engines tomorrow. This build has been a long time coming and I'm glad that its finally over. Aside from the hole it left in my pocket, I feel pretty good lol smile

It all started off with a bad water pump that needed replacing...

From the day I bought my car I knew I wanted to install a built motor. Ruben and Tim can attest to this. Unfortunately my aspirations outweighed my finances.

After doing hours of research, for months on end I narrowed it down to a stroker motor. My first thought was to build a 6 bolt with a 2g head and as time went on I wanted something that was a bit more suitable for my needs. Hence the 2.3 stroker, it gives me more low end power and torque and also will give me the off boost power that I would like for beating around the city.

I want to thank everyone who has assisted me with my journey.Especially through the countless questions I had along the way. I appreciate your patience, understanding and knowledge. Without it I would not have made it this far.

THE MOTOR

Magnus 100mm Billet Forged Crank
Magnus Ross Racing 2.3 Stroker Pistons w/ rings
Magnus Billet Connecting Rods
ARP 2000 Bolts
ACL Race Bearings
Mitsubishi Timing Belt Kit (Balance shaft eliminated)
Mitsu Harmonic Balancer
Mitsu MLS Head Gasket
ARP Head studs
New frost plugs
GMB Water Pump
EVO Beehive Springs and Retainers
EVO Nitride Coated Valves
FP Valve Stem Seals
HKS 264/264 Cams
HKS Cam Gears
Topline Gasket Kit

Engine was Hot tanked, Blue Printed, Clearenced, Block/Head resurfaced, Complete rotating assembly Balanced, Line honed/Torque plated.

While the car was down I also did several other performance/maintenance upgrades/repairs. That list will have to wait till a later date. smile

Special Mention to RTM Racing and Rainbow Engines!!

The best part about this adventure was that I gained so much knowledge about our cars and the way they operate. I hope that one day I can transfer the knowledge I gained through this experience to someone else..

Thanks guys, Brian I am currently running the FP 68hta. It's a blast to drive around the city and was holding strong right to red line at 28psi. I know Kevin k. Pushed it to it's limits, but I still have some ways to go before I get there... I was hitting full boost around 3500 rpm, with the Stroker it should drop to around 2800-3000 rpm smile

Glad you posted a thread about your car Nigel. I love that your solution for a bad water pump was a stroker motor rotflmao Sounds like its really coming together. Bet it'll be a real beast. Post some pictures so we can all ooh an ahh some more laugh

Ha ha yea Jeff, it's not your typical solution I guess, but I didn't want to build something that I would outgrow... Although I don't think I'll ever end up running the motor even close to what it is capable of, I guess it's just piece of mind... And a true example of our quest for going bigger... One thing led to another I guess lol

THE TRANSMISSION

EVO 3 Transmission/ Transfer Case
ACT 2600 Clutch Kit
Fidanza Lightened Flywheel
Mitsu Throwout Bearing
Mitsu Fork and Pivot Ball
FP Mounting Kit
Mitsu Master/Slave Cylinders
Stainless Braided Clutch Line
Redline MTL 90
Redline Lightweight Shockproof

Once I decided that I was going with a built motor, I soon realized that the transmission would be the weak link in my new set-up. After doing tons of research, I managed to find locally a Magnus Built Evo 3 Transmission with 35,000kms on it for a fair price. With receipts smile

"The EVO-III 1st gear is 11% taller than the OEM first gear and it's ideal for both drag racing or autocross. The double synchro 2nd gear features biased engagement teeth for long life. The 3rd and 4th gears are double synchro'd and feature close ratio gearing for improved acceleration. 5th gear is taller for added top speed and improved fuel economy. Transmission is fully blueprinted. All gears are shot peened for increased durability. 3rd/4th hub is CNC machined to provide proper clearance and improved oiling of the synchronizers."

It was a no-brainier that I had to have this transmission. I must thank Reza and Tim Zimmer for all the advice and support.

Nice car Nigel!

Nice list of parts that went into it too. Good call on the new fork and ball. I kinda kick myself for not incorporating atleast an evo3 first gear into my trans while I had it apart. But whats done is done. I wonder what the 60 foot differences would be among the two. stock gear run --> evo3 1st gear run (in the same car)

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - March 28, 2013 08:54 pm UTC

I've had the Evo 5th gear on my shopping list for a long time now but I never realized the first gear was that much bigger. It will work well with your stroker. Perhaps I should think about that as well...

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - March 28, 2013 10:48 pm UTC

Consider the longer evo 5th as it works very well with the stroker. Its great for highway cruising also the top speed will increase to over 300km/h. According to my logs the evo1st is good for 70km@7850rpm.
My latest log shows 250km/h@6300rpm with evo(longer) 5th.

70km in first?! Holy moley!!! First with a stroker is so damn quick. It would be a perfect fit for a taller gear.

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - March 29, 2013 01:16 am UTC

Because of the stroker be careful how much torque you make, I killed 2 built transmissions in the last 3 years. The first one killed 4th gear and the second time 3rd went. Both times while doing logs at speed and not from launching. The evo 3-4(short)gears are good but not for strokers. My next trans will be the H/D unit from Jacks with REM ISF Micropolishing. Don't dyno the car as it creates a lot of heat and kills the tranny. For me it was all the 40psi pulls I was doing. smile

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - March 29, 2013 01:20 am UTC

Thanks for the heads up Paul! I'll definitely take note of that... How much power are you making to the wheels?
Posted By: Paul Sitarski

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - March 29, 2013 01:25 am UTC

I was trapping 135mph(3280lb) at around 35psi, on the mustang awd dyno it did 586/wheel but i lost the vac line to the boost gauge so it was bleeding some pressure. Some of my best logs show around 670hp(at 42psi) with the v3 link.

Pssh come for a ride in my Malibu. 70km/h in first? Try 100+...mind you, I only have 2 gears, but a V8 screaming at the top of its lungs does sound pretty nice laugh

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - March 29, 2013 12:22 pm UTC

I also found the weakness of an EVOVIII a few years back. Went to mush on a launch.

All in all our Trannys can take some abuse but only for some time. Some of the "Heavy Hitters" keep a Tranny Log and record their pass and dyno pulls. The refresh their tranny with new $hafts and Gears and start again.

For my case I do not make as much power as Paul but I use to pop the clutch. That did put some internal stress to a weaker EVOVIII Input Shaft. Paul has some more "Gerbils" under his Bonet and normaly ease into 1st. He scrheads 3 & 4 later in the run; that is what I call a crasy torque curve.

BRAKES

EBC Greenstuff Pads
BAER Drilled and Slotted Rotors

Nothing crazy here, just fresh pads and rotors, I'd like to go with stainless lines and maybe even a big brake upgrade in the future. Calipers were cleaned up and rebuilt, new slider bolts/boots... Could definitely use some powder coating. I'd also like like to use some POR 15 in the wheel wells.

This tranny is AMAZING!! I've heard so many good things about the evo trannies, but I can assure you, it will not disappoint you! I was cruising in 5th gear at 2400 rpm doing 100 km. Third and Fourth gear are so close it is almost effortless to shift. Well worth the $$$

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - April 02, 2013 01:44 am UTC

This is what the log looks like from broken 3rd(evo trans), the tranny was working perfect just before that happened. Nothing to blame just exceeded the limit of the gears.

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - April 05, 2013 02:35 am UTC

I agree with the boys in you should get bigger injectors.
As for the meth, I have always said I won't get it until I am looking at getting a new turbo, this way I can get some extra life out of my current one.
Posted By: Nigel Hap

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - April 05, 2013 04:50 am UTC

The thought of bigger injectors has crossed my mind several times. I'm at about 90% duty cycle at 28psi.

As for Meth, I've purchased a Devils Own Stage 2 (progressive) kit. With all the upgrades ie: dual nozzle, solenoid.

I've held off from installing it until I was a bit more efficient with tuning/had the time to relocate battery to the trunk and install the kit properly.

I'm sure I can really push my lil turbo to the limits once I get hooked on Meth!!

Re: My 2.3 Stroker Build (7 Bolt) - April 05, 2013 01:31 pm UTC

Those 680s aren't going to last long at 90% duty cycle. You'll be forced to buy new injectors sooner than later. You should not see any more than about 80%.
