Tranny rebuild parts?

Tranny rebuild parts? - May 07, 2009 03:32 am UTC

Now that I am short a tranny I am investigating what it will cost me to rebuild this thing. Does anyone know where to get mitsu transmisison parts for a reasonable price? I checked Jacks and his part prices are way off the map.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 07, 2009 04:13 am UTC

which gears grind? does the shifter find all the gear ratios when the engine isn't running? Does it to anything that seems odd? Weird sounds?

The dealer is the only source. Unless you consider jobbers that specialize in transmission parts. Then you'll have to go underground.

The bearings (shims) will all be replaced, as well as any roll pins, keys, spings, 1-2 hub slider, blocker rings...you'll only know once the unit has been disassembled, cleaned, and inspected.

Let me know what parts you need and I'll give you prices for OEM bits.

I don't have a complete list together but the regular rebuild stuff...synchros, bearings, shift forks. I'd also like the EVO input spline and 1st gear and if not unreasonably expensive the EVO 3 and 4.

teamrip.com used to have rebuild kits, but I don't see it listed on their site anymore. You could try calling them.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 07, 2009 11:01 pm UTC

I talked to TRE today and they no longer sell parts. I talked to Jack and he said he does do a DIY rebuild package-$1200US for the parts and machining (4 spider diff) for the value build. Still pretty steep but getting better!

I'm sort of on the ledge between the different options. I only want to do this once but I don't have the coin to over-do it. I do really want that larger evo 1st though, I think it would be better for short autox tracks.

Hey Tashko can you get EVO gears for a decent price? They are technically OEM...in Japan.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 08, 2009 01:54 am UTC

The prices from the guys in the US are decent, they aren't gouging, but yes, I can get EVO gears. I have a set going into my tranny that's being built this month.

I'm also working with a machine shop to do 4-spider diffs but it won't be offered until after I put some abuse into mine.

I'll confirm the pricing and availability but expect the price to be around $1250 (taxes included) for the input shaft, 1st, 3rd, 3rd sub-gear, 4th, 5th input, and 5th intermediate. The double synchros are about $90.

I'll price them individually for you.

The ones I listed are the EVOIII gears. Which EVO gears do you want?

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 08, 2009 03:05 am UTC

I thought the heavy duty 3rd and 4th were the only ones worth upgrading. Are those also double synchro? Do you know who manufactures these? Are they a local source? Please include prices. Thanks

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 08, 2009 12:20 pm UTC

Thanks Tashko, I'd rather buy local and support your habits anyway! I don't need the EVO 5th (as far as I understand it you can use the DSM 5th on the EVO shaft) but I do need the 3 and 4 (seeing as how my missing teeth are on 3rd gear).

I'd be willing to help you test that 4 spider diff. I don't mind breaking stuff (as a fellow engineer www.appliedkinetics.ca I am all about product development)!

Not sure if you are into it or not but I'm sure there are other guys on here that would be interested in a package for rebuilds if you put one together. If not I'll likely end up buying things a bit peice meal as I go!

Cesar: the EVO 1st is not only supposed to be stronger but it has a higher ratio which is benefitial for short autox courses where the DSM first gear is useless.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 08, 2009 09:49 pm UTC

Lol, thanks, always need help supporting the addiction, as you know yourself!

We'll see about the 4-spider. The shop is making two, eventually, it sucks being low on the job queue.

I'll think about creating a kit if I get some time in the coming weeks and if there is interest maybe I can get better pricing if I bring in a couple of sets. I only ordered one set the first time because I didn't feel like holding a few grand worth of gears! I don't know where the shops in the US get their gears to have them available that quick or in stock, I get mine from Mitsu Japan.

The prices have gone up a bit since I bought my set:
MD747887 - Input Shaft - $290
MD743979 - 1st - $198
MD747250 - 3rd - $160
MD747252 - 4th - $370 *I have to check this, seems too high
MD744807 - 5th Input - $172
MD743956 - 5th Inter. - $200
MD743314 - 3rd Sub-gear - $28.00

Not sure what happened with the 4th gear price, it jumped about $70! Might work out cheaper to get the stuff from Jack's.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 09, 2009 03:53 am UTC

Man it adds up quickly! I finished diassembly and I am missing a tooth on the large diameter gear (not sure what it is but it is the biggest one in there, reverse or something?) and its mate, so this tranny may end up costing too much to rebuild.

I don't suppose anyone knows where I can buy an EVO III tranny? That would save me a lot of time and money.

Tashko: if you want to jump queue I could take a look at making some parts in my shop at work. I'm getting pretty handy with the CNC mill! ...Cost would be future consideration when it comes to charging me for the diff I just made;)

Check them out, they may have something, if not, they can get something in for you. I know Reza and Kevin have both purchased from these guys before, and Kevin says his transmission is solid.

Worth checking out

edit::
What year car are you driving? I know Kevin purchased a 2G tranny for his 1G because of the longer 1st gear and overall stronger tranny. $700 from them, and might be able to get it cheaper from them. So $500 cheaper, and you drive there pick it up bring it home and install it, good to go.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 11, 2009 12:28 am UTC

While we're talking about ordering EVO tranny parts, how about:

MD738900 - EVO3 Limited Slip front Diff assy
MD747378 - EVO3 3rd/4th hub and sleeve. It is different from the DSM one
MD746691 - EVO 2nd Gear
MD749084 (w/abs), MD749085 (w/o abs) - EVO3 Center Diff gear kit (don't know what the difference is)
MD749754 - 1st/2nd Shift fork (watch out this has the plastic inserts)
MD749755 - 3rd/4th Shift fork (again, plastic inserts)

The shift rails are different numbers too as well as the clutch fork pivot ball.

I have a brand new set of the EVO shift forks with the plastic inserts. I'd be interested in some sort of metallic insert replacement if someone was going to make some.

I would also be interested in getting a 2nd gear. I've got a small grind at high RPM.

As for 1st gear, go big or go home. I am willing to supply a drawing to anyone who wants it for machining 1st gear to accept the 2nd gear double cone synchro. I've had it in my car for several years now.

I am also willing to share my design for the 4 spider center diff. I've been using it in my car for many years as well.

Last tip: if you buy the 1st/2nd gear hub & sleeve kit MD747643, it comes with the single cone synchro for 1st and the "good" (IMO) double cone 2nd synchro for less money than buying the Hub and sleeve and 2nd synchro separately. You get the 1st gear synchro for free. At least that used to be the case a couple years ago.

OK, this is the last tip: Don't cheap out. Replace the keys and springs in the hub and sleeve. They are not expensive and are important for good shifting. They do get some wear over time.

Alright, really the last tip: rebuilding the tranny (or any tranny for that matter) IS NOT CHEAP. If you need to replace gears, you are going to be over $1000. Basic refresh is about $6-700 (synchros, bearings, seals, etc.), parts only. I suppose you could do it for less if you cheap out and reuse some stuff.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 11, 2009 01:52 am UTC

The evo forks are steel?

Are you able to send me the drawing for the double cone 1st? I'm curious...What did you do different for the 4 spider diff?

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 11, 2009 01:05 pm UTC

So next question is will an EVO 3 gearbox mount directly as is (after changing the final drive ratio) or do I need to transfer the guts to the DSM case?

Also I've heard of guys getting the EVO transfercase and rear end (so they get the correct ratios), anyone know if my driveshaft(s) would mount directly or would I need a custom shaft?

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 11, 2009 07:54 pm UTC

Cesar,
Yes, the EVO shift forks are steel. If you can get the early ones they have no plastic inserts, just steel. Unfortunately, that part number was discontinued a long time ago. Someone thought that the plastic insert was a better way (huh?).

I don't think I did much different than any other 4 spider. Basically, make room for the extra 2 gears and put in a roller thrust bearing inside the diff. I just did it myself because I had access to a machine shop at the time.

Where would you like the 1st gear drawing sent?

Brad,
IIRC, if you look at the timing/progression of the part numbers, the 2G actually got the EVO case and some of the good tranny parts. Anyway, YES, you can use the EVO case in the 2G. It has the same motor mount holes/positions as the 2G. If you like, you can take a peek at the tranny in my car to double check.

Don't know about the T-case or rear question. The T-case might be the same, I'd have to check the numbers. The rear is quite different if memory serves. So I'd say high probability of modifying the driveshaft.

Tashko,
When you get a chance, I'd like pricing on 2nd gear and the limited slip front diff.
Posted By: Bradley Woodward

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 11, 2009 08:44 pm UTC

Thanks Rob, I guess I will have to open up the case (when I find one!) and change the output ratio to match the DSM rear end. BTW Can you send those drawings my way too? (e-mail is in profile).

I've called several of the local JDM importers and non seem interested in importing EVO 3 parts. Bunch of jerks!

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 11, 2009 09:22 pm UTC

EVOIII parts are now in the obsolete bin so they will slowly disappear from availability.

I priced most of this stuff out last August, I'll post those prices when I get a chance so people will have a ballpark while I get updated pricing.

What's with all the 1st gear double synchro talk? Just heel & toe. freak

@Rob, my experience has been that diff assy's are stupid pricey but I'll check.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 12:14 am UTC

Well I have a freshly rebuilt EVO 3 tranny lined up but before I pull the trigger I want to know what the remaining costs are going to be.

I need a new output shaft/gear (both the small transfer case gear and the mating larger one on the front differential are toast). Used would be ideal but I don't know how many people have these things lying around (for a 95). I would need new bearings unless I can get them off of the EVO shafts without buggering them.

This will mean opening up the tranny so I will probably need new roll pins as well.

I should have two centre diffs which I can combine, so I would just need a couple of bearings to fix that up.

That would leave me with a 2g case and most of the guts up for sale should anyone want them.

any advise or offers is welcome and indeed needed!

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 01:02 am UTC

I not sure what you are trying to do. I think you are trying to match the final drive in the front to the one in the back.

In that case, just swap the crown/ring and pinion with the one that was already in the car. if this is what you are trying to do, then you won't need to replace bearings. there is one bearing on the shaft with the pinion gear, but just reuse that one.
The output shaft for the tcase can be removed by simply removing the Viscous couping. Don't loose that single ball bearing that keeps it in place! If you don't damage the roll pins, reuse them also.

What's wrong with your t-case?

what makes you think you have an evo3 tranny?
Posted By: Bradley Woodward

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 01:24 am UTC

Slow down there. Yes I am trying to match the ratios. The crown gear and pinion in my tranny are toast, so they can not be reused (that is the big one on the front diff right?). Nothing is wrong with my t-case, by case I ment the transmission case.

I have hooked up with a guy in the UK that has an EVO III which makes me think it is likely he is selling an EVO III tranny.

Posted By: Rob Greer

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 02:17 am UTC

I have a couple spares of the big front diff gear. Don't think I have the small gear though. I'd have to check.

How much is this guy selling the tranny for? With shipping (and taxes likely) is it still going to be worth getting it versus simply buying the gears and putting them in your current tranny? Keep in mind the tranny from the UK is used (isn't it?).
Posted By: Bradley Woodward

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 12:33 pm UTC

I think it is still a good deal as follows (let me know what you think):

It's used but freshly rebuilt. Guy is offering it at 800 pounds shipped ($1400). We'll call that option 1 (full EVO box and all of the nice ratios), option 2 would be:

1) Start with my tranny and do a basic rebuild. Parts would be around $800 plus shipping ($1200 US + shipping for Jacks rebuild kit, but that is including machining and a 4 spider diff).

2) Add some EVO gears (I at least have to replace 3rd cause it is toast)and the extra syncros to go with them. Call that $300+

3) Buy a couple of centre diff gears for the 4 spider diff = used maybe cheap, new maybe $100 + shipping.

So that adds up pretty quick to like $1200+shipping and that is with just 1 gear replaced EVO style. The extra, say $100, (after shipping) pays for the rest of the EVO gearset and the fact that someone else has done the rebuild for me! If the deal falls through in the UK then option 2 is the way I will go.
Posted By: Rob Greer

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 03:21 pm UTC

Just remember that the EVO tranny still only has a 2 spider center diff. That is a concern if you're going to do much launching.
Also you'd still have to do something about the front diff ratio with the EVO tranny.

A plus for the EVO tranny is it may have the limited slip front diff!

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 04:11 pm UTC

I didn't know these EVO tranny parts were getting harder to find.

I have two complete transmissions at home, haven't researched it much but I believe both have Evo gearsets in them.

W5M332WQYK
Transmission is perfect, just the bellhousing is cracked.

W5M332MMZL
A friend was attempting to run it on his front wheel drive, and tried to weld the center diff, but didn't get it right and passed it on to me. Transmission ran perfect before that.

I was hanging onto these, but if anyone wants them, make me a reasonable offer. I believe these have some GOLD in them.

Re: Tranny rebuild parts? - May 14, 2009 04:12 pm UTC

Ya, the thing is that I can steal the spider gears from the EVO tranny and my old one to make a 4 spider without having to buy new gears. The way I see it a 4 spider is not an option for me, it is a requirement!

I have to replace the front diff ring and pinion no matter what, mine are toast. (Rob, shoot me a price for that ring gear and the pinion if you have one, assuming what you have is the right tooth count for a 95)

The tranny is off a GSR, the guy is not sure if it is front LSD or not, it was an option though so fingers crossed. Though I'm not sure if I would want it, more likely to break things and maybe more understeer as well (not sure on this one)?
