Exhaust?

Hey,
Well you guys were right, once you start on your mods, its like an addiction, I just want to keep going further and further even though I have just begun.
Currently I have a 92 TSi AWD 5psd, its damn good mechanically. Rebuilt engine and clutch 30K ago.
At this moment I have the following modifications:
- K&N
- Hacked Can / Modded MAS (No Silencer, no lower honeycombing, backed out screw)
- Rewired stock fuel pump
- Tighter Shifter Mod
- MBC (Not installed)

I do have a Dave B. Test Pipe with a dump tube coming, but I am thinking I might as well sell that and put the money towards full exhaust perhaps. Or just use it in combination with a cat back?

My ultimate goal would to run low low 13's on pump gas. So if that gives you an idea of where I want to be........ ;-)

Now the exhaust questions:
Most shops I talk to don't do mandrel bends. Is it worth the extra time/money/hassles to grab some mandrel bends from JC Whitney versus going to a pressbent system?

What sort of coin are you guys forking out for various exhaust systems? Both Turbo-Back, DP-Back, and Cat-Back in various sizes and configurations?

What size? 2.5" to 3"? how about in between? What kind of price/performance differences are you seeing between 2.5" and 3" Systems?

Resonance and noise isnt too much of a problem, I've ridden in cars with 3" exhaust and it didnt bother me whatsoever.

OK, 2g vs 1G manifolds: What is the big deal here? They seem to be identical to me (lining both up side by side). Whats wrong with a heavily ported 1g manifold?

And lastley: What would be a good mod for after the exhaust? I'm thinking a larger metal UIC Pipe? And with exhaust, UIC Pipe, and say 15-16PSI of boost, how long is my clutch going to last with 30K on it?

Thanks!!

I can answer one question from experience.
the difference betwwen the 1G and 2G manifolds is that the 2G is made from better material that doesn't crack as easy

Yeah and it's just found as an overall good upgrade, it's pretty hard to find people that want to buy 1G ex-manifold.

Hey Collin [Linked Image]

Did you end up buyin a 2G manifold, that probably woulda been a better idea.

A heavily ported 1G would work just as well, but as said, would be more prone to cracking. The 2G as is is pretty much the same as a 1G that had a fair bit of porting done to it, and you can port the 2G out even farther.

Most shops don't do mandrel bends because the machine is a lot of money. They can buy the bends themselves, though, but will probably charge you. It's better to go mandrel-bent. If you press-bend, you could go with 3" piping (if it's bent well, especially sand-filled) and get the equivilent of a 2.5-2.75" mandrel system. If your 'ultimate' goal is only low 13's, then 2.5" mandrel is all you need. You also have to choose the right muffler.

Speaking of mufflers, what's everyone using?
I'm looking for an exhaust myself right now, and trying to decide on a muffler.

My vote goes for the DynoMax series of oval straightthrus. That's the UltraFlo for SS, or the RaceMagnum for welded.

I hear Dynomax is making a 3" Oval Ultraflow now. Sweeeet.

Running 15 lbs. boost with 2.5 intercooler piping, DP & exhaust (mandrel bent), my clutch lasted 169,000 k (9 years). And even then, it wasn't too bad.
