Looking into rebuilding my small 16g turbo

Wondering how particular of a job is it? Should I not attempt rebuilding myself as I've never taken a turbo apart let alone rebuild one

Also considering at the same time if I should upgrade to a billet wheel and further with the compressor wheel do I go with the 18g when in td05 housing or just a small 16g billet wheel? I have read this could be preferable in my fwd setup as the bit of lag I would notice would help with traction

What kind of prices should I be expecting for this kind of work?

I've spoken to a member on facebook who seems to be well known for turbo rebuilds 'Jeremiah morrow' and he's said $250 usd for a rebuild with billet 16g wheel on my s16g plus shipping

I would look for used Evo 3 16g instead. My 0.02 cents

For 250us you could source down a good evo16g or 20g somewhere here in Canada. But you may have to wait. To rebiuld the small16g would cost more en its worth with the exchange rate. Unless you know where there are rebiuld kits in Canada. You should be able to find lots of good s16g for the same price as the rebiuld kit.

But if you really wanted a fresh s16g. Buy a kit.. And go for it. Its not hard. Just read up before you start.

You can rebuild it, but if this is your first rebuild, and you're most likely redoing your engine, I wouldn't take the chance. Either get it rebuilt by someone with a guarantee of sorts so you can have a sure thing. When you rebuild one on your own, you're most likely going to be checking it more often than not to make sure everything is working correctly.

Your only main issue with rebuilding it yourself is having a place to rebalance the rotating assembly. Any turbo diesel repair shop can do it for you. Usually, 100$ or so for a rebalance.

Will depend also on if there is scoring on the turbine shaft etc and what components you'll need to replace. As sourcing a new turbine shaft/compressor blade, rebuilt kit etc can get expensive with the exchange rate.

You could get a billet wheel, although for that size of a compressor blade I doubt there would be a drastic change in performance. I was contemplating it myself but the cast blade is already pretty lightweight on the 16g realm.

18g would be doable, especially if you go with an extended 18g wheel BUT you'd also need to have your compressor cover machined to accept the new wheel or buy a new compressor cover.

One thing throw out there is the rebuild kit not including any wheel is $70 ish from rtm

The rebuild is pretty straight forward, as Gui said you will just need to find a place to balance and don't waste your money on billet.

I wouldnt bother with a balance if you mark the wheels before assembly.

Going to try and separated housing this week to look to see if contact was made I do know the compressor wheel has a bent fin but I can say I didn't notice any spool issues but now that I think about it that may cause premature bearing wear causing more play due to imbalance?

Nick Lamoureux in Ottawa rebuilds MHI turbos for decent prices, good guy and does good work. A few of us on here know him.

Maybe... But am running a big 16g that has over 300kms on it.. And missing a dew chips off its wheels. Spools fine. no excessive play so far.

Fin contact is not great.. You could get away with rebiulding but if the fins contact... Then it may be too far. May be time fir an upgrade.

Budget wise, Id thro a rebiuld kit in it and run it.

Willing to spend 400-500.. Just find a bigger turbo.

Turbos are actually rather simple in construction; it would not be difficult to rebuild it yourself with the information that's available. However, don't bother rebuilding it if you're not going to balance it. When my Green was rebuilt, the wheels were reused. The compressor wheel was in perfect shape, the turbine wheel had one fairly bent fin and one barely bent fin. It required a good amount of material removed to balance it properly. Your instincts are correct: if you have a bent fin, you should definitely balance it. $100 seems high for a balance alone, but you'd have to get your own quotes there.

All that being said, I agree with Alex and Jay: spend your money on a good condition used Evo3 16G.

Manny, you most likely have other more critical items to take care of first before replacing/rebuilding your turbo. If you wait longer you'll find one eventually for a good price. Terry S. always got an eye on DSM deals; you can let him know u need one I may also have mine for sale in late spring after i swap to 68HTA.

Alex the reason I'm looking at scenarios for my turbo is that I paid a pretty penny for it not too long ago and it has considerably more shaft play than when I first installed it so I think I'd want something done about it prior to me getting ready to fire up springtime.

As for now I've gotten everything stripped, trans drained and axles removed hope to have the motor pulled and dropped to rainbow within the next week or so
