CTV's coverage of the Olympics

CTV's coverage of the Olympics - February 14, 2010 11:35 pm UTC

Is it just me or is there anyone else who finds the CTV coverage of the olympics horrible.

Their interviews with athletes have been pathetic. The silver medalist in the moguls comes to mind. They just kept beating the fact that she didn't win Gold over and over again instead of congratulating her on the Silver.

The morning show today was the worst bit of television I think I've ever seen, I feel ashamed that I actually watched it. None of those people have any business commentating on sports and it shows. There is so much bullshit between events about 'how muscles work' with Dr. Whogivesafuck and interviews with people who have nothing to do with anything I don't understand how they think it's good broadcasting.

And that song....my god, don't get me started on the 'I believe song'.

The government should've dished out the dough and put CBC and Ron Maclean back on it 'cause CTV is almost ruining it for me.

Agreed. Lisa La Flamme has no business being there and don't get me started on Brian Williams! mad

I agree also. I have a hard time watching TSN and Sportsnet already and now this. What a total lack of class. During the Beijing Olympics, I was glued to the TV, not now, I watched maybe an hour at best today. The only bright spot for me has been the Rick Hansen segments.

I agree with all comments here.....I want Ron Maclean back, his coverage of the summer Olympics was second to none.

CTV have commentators and interviewers that generally have nothing to do with major sporting events, and now they think they can cover the Meca of all sporting.....ridiculous! The two that called the Men's moguls last night (although they did a fairly respectible job) had never really called anything like that before...

Don't hate me for this, but I have actually been catching a fair bit of the NBC coverage blush The only problem there is that most of their coverage is time delayed, but at least they have veteran reporters who actually know the sports....geeeezzzz

Worst olympics EVER, should have know from the start it would be awful.

Most embarassing terrible opening ceremonies, (what you didnt know Canada was entirely french/native indian people)

Throw that on top of poor track design/safety killing a kid day 1, I'd say this olympics has been permanately black balled.

Re: CTV's coverage of the Olympics - February 15, 2010 03:14 pm UTC

Yeah I thought the opening ceremonies were a little painful as well....I don't mind the idea of "embracing our heritage", but I think they are going WAAAYYY overboard with it!

As for the tragic death, yes I agree it was a tragedy, but I don't think you can blame organizers/designers for the death. The Canadian teams have been practicing there for months now, with little to no incidents, and if you sign up for Luge to do 150km/hr on your back (or stomach for Skeleton), then you are taking your life in your hands, whatever you track you may be on.

I wouldn't go as far to say this Olympics is black-listed, but they are off to a bit of a rough start for sure.

I agree Mike that NBC has done a good job. The NBC coverage of the womans moguls was more respectful to Jenn Heil than our own. NBC commentators just seemed more excited and seemed to be pulling for her.

Yeah its been real bad, But Hockey should be good, Honestly I just want them to take gold in hockey over anything, I would rather have them win gold in that over the actual olympics but that's just me lol

I can't get over how when they interview the athletes and continously beat on the fact that they didn't win gold.. Don't you wish you won gold? what would you have done differently to win gold? It's too bad you didn't win eh??

Even yesterday, Mellisa Hollingsworth came 5th (not even a full second behind the first place) and they called it a dissapointing result from our own athlete. Someone should go there and punch out some of these announcers, especially James Duthie.

I noticed that too Dustin.

How bout a Congratulations on winning Silver/Bronze instead of awww, too bad you didn't win Gold.

To be fair Mellisa Hollingsworth Is ranked number one in the world and was considered a lock for gold. For her to finish 5th was a major shock, and to finish less then a second behind is an eternity in a sport measured in 1000ths of a second.

Or to put it into perspective for you Leaf fan's, Mellisa not winning a medal is as big a shock as the Leafs making the playoffs.

I can say with complete honesty that I've never been prouder of being Canadian than right now. I never expected such a large gold medal count from our boys and girls and as a result breaking the Winter Olympic records for most gold by a host country and most "d'or" medals ever! cool These athletes really have made us all proud. tu

I actually disagree... mostly... as I can't comment on the interviews you speak of.

I enjoyed CTV's coverage, and actually thought this evening how good of a job they did.

Along with the song, I also enjoyed it. I believe.

As for the Dr. bits, I ALSO enjoyed those.. muscles, brain function, etc. To me, they were quick, educational, and interesting.

Maybe I'm biased because I went to Vancouver/Whistler for the Olympics, and still have much of the spirit still in me (or maybe just the Kokanee beer), but I must say, I'm satisfied and impressed with the coverage.

(Saw Jennifer Hedger in person in Whistler village.... such a hottie, wicked bum).

I'm a big fan of Kippy as well, and enjoyed him with Bob McKenzie and company.

Incredible! Just incredible!!! Hats off to all of our Canadian athelites! Way to make us all proud smile

And, Crosby... wow. That's a perfect example of "you can't score unless you put the puck on net". From that angle, who saw that coming?! Gold Medal Goal!!!!

Re: CTV's coverage of the Olympics - March 01, 2010 02:22 pm UTC

Bah, you're a slave to the media Pete. Maybe Lisa Laflemme should start doing the commentating on Leafs games.
You were probably so high and loaded everything seemed AMAZING.

I will say it did improve as it moved forward but still way too much fluff filler and phony reporters for me.

I Believe I'm happy I never have to hear that awful song again.

Anyway, GO CANADA.
