FRUSTRATED!!! No boost!

FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 01:50 am UTC

95 AWD
14b.

Here's a run down of what I've been doing over the past few days.

5K Stutterbox, and I can't build more than 3 psi of boost.

There are NO boost leaks, nada, zip. I've leak-tested to 15psi so far (Not a big enough compressor) and I have no boost leaks.

I just picked up a new EVO III Hotside (Borrowed) from a member here, and slapped it on, therefore the hotside is perfect.

The timing (mechanical) is off 1/2 a tooth, but not enough to cause this.

The exhaust manifold is a little bit wet at the head, however I don't see any smoke coming from it.

I'm completely baffled as to why I have no boost. The turbo has little up/down and no in/out play. It's Ian's 14b, however I do believe it was abused by the previous owner.

Help????

Try another wastegate.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 02:42 am UTC

-make sure the wastegate arm is on.
-make sure the flapper is not stuck open(wastegate stuck open)
-make sure the flapper is closing all the way.

Get a 50 Trim; that should take car of it!!!

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 03:50 am UTC

Can't build boost while driving, or just can't build much boost with the stutter box?

Wire the wastegate shut and pull the actuator line, to see if it's a boost control problem.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 04:16 am UTC

Can't build boost for both, only gets 3 psi max.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 04:20 am UTC

Sounds like wastegate is stuck open to me, had this happen before.
Posted By: Ryan Laliberte

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 11:10 am UTC

Ugh.. no. The wastegate is NOT stuck open. I wouldn't make that much of an elementary mistake.

Can't build boost while driving, stutterbox, stutterbox with antilag, nothing.

I've also pulled the boost reference line to the wg, does nothing.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 11:25 am UTC

I seen the crack in the Hotside. Defenately no boost worty!!!

Having said that Ryan and as much as it might hurt one proud; Wire the WG shut. That will for all eleminate any doubt.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 02:14 pm UTC

Have you tried turning the turbo comp wheel by hand to see if it's freely spun?
Posted By: Michael Zeppieri

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 02:24 pm UTC

Ryan, does the car have a cat? A badly clogged cat will let you idle well, but will give you little to no boost.
Posted By: Ian Burnside

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 02:55 pm UTC

Everything worked fine before the turbo swap, the t-25 would build 14-16 psi all day long no problem.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 03:08 pm UTC

Try dropping the down pipe and going for a test run, that should rule it out.
Posted By: Ian Burnside

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 08:59 pm UTC

And yes, the turbo spins freely by hand, with very little play in any direction.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 09:16 pm UTC

The only thing left to look at is the boost controller. If you have a manual one you might want to take it apart to have closer look.
Posted By: Mike Kuttschrutter

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 09:23 pm UTC

Boost controller issues would only make it stay open longer/create MORE boost.

Like I said before wastegate is stuck open, flapper is not connected or broken.
Or the exhaust housing has a huge crack in it.
Posted By: Ryan Laliberte

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 20, 2009 09:23 pm UTC

Try "not running a boost controller". wink

frack it. Punching out the cat tonight.

To recap for those just joining us.

-Only making 3 psi of boost.
-It's not because the wastegate is open, The thing is very very much closed.
-Wastegate acutator is not causing an issue
-No boost leaks
-No exhaust leaks.

I agree with Ghislain buy a 50 trim lol, got to get it going soon we got seafood to eat in Trenton

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 21, 2009 01:34 am UTC

Yeah, well I'd like to get it going a lot sooner that that!

Turbo's shot, for sure. Punched out the cat, nothing. We free revved a bit and then WOT sutterbox and she built like 15psi!

We couldn't reproduce it.

So I'm confident it's the turbo.

Make sure it's not just a plugged oil return line!
Posted By: Ryan Laliberte

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 24, 2009 11:20 am UTC

It's not, new gasket in there.

Brian, thanks again for the offer, but I'm not looking for a 14b anymore.
Posted By: Rob Strelecki

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 24, 2009 02:42 pm UTC

Did you use RTV? Seriously, double check. If a glob of that blocks only half of the return line, the turbo will dump all sorts of oil. It would be a shame to waste a perfectly good 16g.
Posted By: Ian Burnside

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 24, 2009 03:24 pm UTC

Is it possible that because the turbo sat in my basement all winter with little to no oil in it that the seals dried up? I really dont want to have to buy another turbo as this ones all purdy with powdercoat and porting.
Posted By: Rob Strelecki

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 24, 2009 03:33 pm UTC

No that won't happen.
The seals were either shot already, or the return is blocked.

If it's blown then you only need to replace or rebuild the center section anyways, keep the powder and porting.
Posted By: Ryan Laliberte

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 24, 2009 09:23 pm UTC

Return line isn't blocked. The turbo is toast.

So I need one. Bad.
Posted By: Ian Burnside

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 28, 2009 02:16 am UTC

Is it possible that the turbo wasnt put back together properly when it was sent for powder coating? The compressor housing was taken off so that it could be coated. Is it possible that it was damaged or not re-assembled properly? I guess we'll have to recheck it tomorrow when we take it back off Ryan's car.
Posted By: Rob Strelecki

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 28, 2009 02:40 am UTC

Yes it's possible.
The cold side could be missing the o-ring, but would be like a bad boost leak.
The hot side could have a messed up gate, but that was probably checked (obvious) before install.

I have found a known working 14b. I've been in this car, driven it, felt the turbo pull, so I know it works.

So, if all goes well, car is on the road tonight!

You flippy flopper. I thought you were 100% against 14b/16/18/20g?

You should have just bought the C16g from ebay.

Funny thing is I did! laugh But can't afford the setup needed to run it. (Injectors, FMIC etc).

I'm going for a "stock" setup right now. The 14b is "stock" on a DSM.... just not this one. laugh

If you drove a 5spd it would build boost tongue

But for real, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works.

Off to get my turbo now. Will let you all know how it works out.

You're ahead of yourself Ryan, obviously your car doesn't have any boost fluid in the reservoir! freak

It's actually because he used regular headlight fluid, not the synthetic.

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 28, 2009 11:49 pm UTC

Ian here.

Problem isn't turbo related. A good known 14b was put on and car still produces no boost. Removed oil return line and removed any possible restriction and nothing. Car still has no boost leaks. Tried to see if lower pipe was collapsing during any of this, and it doesnt. Lost for any ideas now.

I'm (Ryan) thinking of going with a solid LICP. Anyone have anything?
Posted By: Michael Muir

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 29, 2009 12:29 am UTC

Wouldn't be ecu related would it, did you have it running alright with the link in it?

Maybe it is the torqued out spindle binder connected to the sludge pump, hate when that happens..

Hey ryan how are you checking for boost?? your brake boosting it right you know that auto's won't build boost in neutral right.

Yes, everything else is stock.
Posted By: Mike Kuttschrutter

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 29, 2009 01:26 pm UTC

Well if it was a boost leak problem that big that it only reads 3psi the car would run like absolute crap as soon as you started boosting.

Which it sounds like it doesn't.

You carried the WORKING wastegate with the WORKING turbo over to this car correct?

Do you have some stupid exhaust leak at the head or manifold to turbo?

Posted By: Grant Redfern

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 29, 2009 01:54 pm UTC

What about removing the stutter box and trying everything stock relating to boost?

Does your vac read properly? You sure it's not a kink in the gauge hose?
Posted By: Rob Strelecki

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 29, 2009 02:12 pm UTC

This is probably going to end up being a transmission problem.
You're just not getting enough load!
I mean what the hell else could it be? Everything else is either rudimentary or has been checked.
Posted By: Ian Burnside

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 29, 2009 03:06 pm UTC

He did install the ipt kit, is it really possible that it could be causing this?
Posted By: Ryan Laliberte

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 29, 2009 09:27 pm UTC

It's not a kink in the hose, my boost gauge is electronic.

Load factor shouldn't make a difference. Stutterbox with or without antilag nets me the same result.

The wastegate I am using is known working. Either way, it doesn't move.

I'm going to swap ECU's tonight, or check what I've done in link.

Honestly, it feels like a HUGE boost leak, yet my car doesn't go rich.

I may have a log around here somewhere of a quick little spin I did. My car doesn't go rich, indicating the MAF doesn't see that much airflow to start dumping fuel, which leads me to lean away from a boost leak.

I'll do a few things tonight and go from there.

I disagree. Load can have everything to do with it. If when you are driving the motor is somewhat freewheeling through the transmission, it's not gonna make much heat for the turbo.

So it feels like you're not making any power? That's what it can feel like when an auto trans doesn't work right.. It's not pulling and it's not trying to pull. See point A.

All I did to the tranny was install the shift kit which was installed correctly as well as the end clutch kit (you can't mess this up, as easy as installing spark plugs), so I am confident it had nothing to do with the transmission. The torque converter, when slipping, will allow the revs to go up but the car not move. I'd also see an A/T Temp light come on in a hurry.

I love you all.

Valve timing isn't "Off", but it is. No longer an issue though. If it's off, it's been off since I bought the car.

Valve timing is "off" by "people's standards".

It's either off, or it's not.

I believe you mentioned it's "off by half a tooth"? Can't be. You were either looking from an odd angle, or cylinder #1 wasn't EXACTLY at TDC.

Off, or off not. There is no try. tongue
Posted By: Ryan Laliberte

Re: FRUSTRATED!!! No boost! - July 31, 2009 02:42 am UTC

It probably wasn't at TDC, I was guestimating by where the crank pulley was on the timing belt cover, and God knows if that thing was on straight. I'm sure it's not off by a tooth, I'm meticulous about my timing belt, and I've done enough to know how to properly set it.

Bahh... what are we getting carried away here for? I fixedededed it!!! laugh laugh laugh
