bad oil leak - October 07, 2010 12:38 am UTC

Ok guys im having a major problem with the my car leaking oil. Ive jacked the car up and let it run and cleaned up all the oil that was on the engine and could not see it leaking from anywhere. Next i revved the car up and held a piece of cardboard over the timing belt, the cardboard got quite a bit of oil on it. I then figured it was coming from inside the timing area. I then pulled the timing cover off and cleaned up everything and started the car, again i could not see it leaking anywhere. By the way there is oil everywhere under the car and on the inside of the hood where the timing belt is. I put in bc 272 cams, by any chance is there different cam seals that go on the ends of the cams for BC or are the stock ok? it seems to be leaking under boost.

No, but chances are you've got a blown cam seal. This happened to me, stop driving your car and fix it.

Or maybe a really bad crack in the valve cover?

Go to a parts store and get some engine oil dye and a black light. Add the dye and run the car for awhile. Then use the black light to trace the path of the oil.

pop the valve cover. take the caps off the cam seals and put them in correctly.

umm i dont think you can just take the seals out without taking the timing belt and cam sprockets off correct?

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I did my cams. Quick fix, sort of. Let us know how it goes!!

I've had that happen with a brand new cam oil seal, what a pain in the a$$. I took it out, cleaned it up and re-installed it. Lubed the inside of the seal well with grease and she worked, dumb luck!! I cannot say that what made it stop leaking, my guess is that it wasn't installed correctly.

Whoever it was that I went past with the black light dye method would be correct!

Providing you wipe down all sensible and (what you feel to be) potential leak spots, the black light dye will show fresh, and very FINE LEAKS! I use this kind of technique for much smaller and more delicate work but it will easily register as a light source for even smaller vaccum leaks!
Provided you mix your dye in with fresh oil this will prove to point you north everytime!

well im going to try taking the valve cover off and the cam cap and putting gasket sealant in there, then pressurize the system and hope it seals. I guess its worth a try vs doing a whole timing belt job just to replace a seal.

I thought that too, but it won't work. The seal is a dynamic seal, which means that it allows movement inside it. Right below that seal is an oil passage. More than likely, the oil is actually spitting out the inside of the cam seal rather than on it's outer edge, and is being spun around by the cam gear itself.

Do the job right the first time man, get a new seal.

For the price of a seal, I agree with Ryan, just get a new one. I tried what you are going to try. I used 'right stuff' rtv around the outside of the cam seal and slipped it back in place without taking the timing belt off. It helped slow the leak not stop it. It was good enough for my work beater, so I didn't care about the small leak and I didn't care if it blew up. You got a completely rebuilt motor and I wouldn't want to risk oil dripping on the timing components.
