Motor went bye bye today

Motor went bye bye today - June 06, 2006 09:59 pm UTC

Crusing to mosport where i attend race school. Light cruise, not getting on boost....notice car starts "dying"....but no sputter....not like its loosing fuel. Weird, so i try and nurse it going slower and barely getting on the throttle, watching all gauges.

Slight ticking starts for about 3 minutes......then "bang" and blue smoke out the tailpipe.

This sucks ass. Can't afford to rebuild. Anyone want a SUPER clean 2G with barely 2 owners and every record as a project? Just put in a brand new Exedy stage 2 clutch and flywheel, has all the goodies. just needs a motor.

Or, anyone got a good cheap used motor i can throw in? I appreciate your help, im a poor student in a bind.

I'm sure you will find someone who wants a mint 2g GSX project... See what happens when you try and sell your car... They stab ya in the back.

Before giving up on the car, try and figure out what went wrong, start by looking for the obvious, holes in the block etc,
compression/leakdown test, if you don't have the knowlege/ability to do yourself see if there are any local DSM'ers who can help.
Look at it this way, even if you spend $2000 to repair, you are still better off than selling it broken.
Saw that you are looking for 8g's for the car, I don'y yhink you are going to be able to get that for what is now essentially a "shell"

Tim is right. You'll probably only get around 2g's for the shell, and in my mind, that would still be high for a broken car. You sure its not just a broken timing belt?

Don't think it is crank-walk, the ticking does, but as a previous CW victim, it doesn't cause a reduction in power, ussually you get the "funny" clutch, then the motor eats the crank trigger. CW doesn't cause smoke as well.

Real low on oil... spun a bearing... blew it up.

Hey Charlie
Thats a shame. I have seen your car around town and its a beauty. For the price to put a good used motor in I think it would be well worth it. I have a buddy that would probably do the swap for you for pretty cheap. Let me know if I can be of any help to you.

I know a guy that has a 2G turbo block with the pistons and rods with like 5000kms on them. Been sitting for a while and I am sure he will get rid of it for cheap!

sounds like your timing belt slipped a few teeth, and then just gave out.

Oh i have a complete rebuilt 2g head, its super clean with only roughly 30k on it.

Everyone has their own e-opinion of what happened, but as stated above, look into the source of the problem yourself before you totally give up on it.

Good luck!

Timing belt is fine....no teeth slipped.
Check valve cover and CAS sensor, no valves broken, no sensor issue

Turned motor over by hand with 1/2 drive.....#2 cylinder gets stuck. Thinking either broken ring lands, C-rod end caps came off, or something else.

No oil or holes in oil pan......oil isn't full of metal either, so i dont feel its a bearing.

If you could find a 2G "shell" like my car for $2000......let me know.

Anyone have a shop near peterborough? I have a VERY experience friend who will help me do this....and possibly build a motor, etc.

Sounds like i need to pull the motor and put a new one in.

Who has the cheap shortblock, etc? Where is he located? I need something somewhat local so i can check it out.

Thanks for all of your support and advise.

If you get a new motor to just "drop in" you will need a motor that omes from a 95-99 turbo, anything else you will need to do some work to get the car to run properly search for 6 bolt in a 2G and "random misfire" you will see some of the issues and "fixes"
if you are looking at fixing the car to sell it off, pull the motor, get some .20 over pistons, have the bores done and drop it back together with new bearings.
At this point you need to decide what the future is for this car.
If you drop a 6-bolt motor in expect about $1500 on top of the price of the motor to get it to run. (DSMlink, 95Eprom, ECU, replacing water lines etc, CAS)
Best advice so far conatct Blayne about the 2G motor he has a line on.
