Building valve spring compressor - April 11, 2015 04:13 am UTC

A little project I've been meaning to do for a while, since I saw it in Jafro's videos. Just works so nice, I want one!

So after about 2 hours of working on it tonight I've got this much done.

He didn't make his but I guess he modified it to work for 4G63 heads.

Awesome, I'll take one please and if you could engineer one for while the head is on as well. Haha. I'll take one of those to.

So it's pretty much done, still need to visit the dollar store to pick up a couple cheep cutting boards. Also going to add a locking bar for when installing. As for removing the springs, works extremely well and fast!

You forgot to powder coat it tongue

Very nicely done, sir smile

Oh don't worry, I think I'm going to coat it some stupidly obnoxious color, just because.

Haha nice work Jason!! Looks wicked. Ikea has cheap cutting boards too and they will be colourful!

Here's a little operation video, works perfectly, takes seconds to remove a valve spring. Of course it's a little tricky to do one handed while holding a camera.

I should bring you my head.

Your next project = Make yourself a tripod wink

I have 3 tripods, but my phone lacks a mount tongue

That's wicked Jason!!

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 02:40 am UTC

Pretty much completed now, other than some color.

Added a piece of Lexan for the head to sit on and a locking bar.

Seriously badass, but I am anxiously awaiting the bright magenta/neon puke green finish you're going to put on this thing!

I guess I'm gonna have yo have a trip to mtl and since I'm there get my valve stem seals changed tongue

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 03:09 pm UTC

And I guess the next thing I should build is another model that can work with the head on the car lol.

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 03:29 pm UTC

+1000000000 on that one jay lol not sure if its feasible but maybe something that mounts to the vc bolt threads or even head stud spots?

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 03:31 pm UTC

That shouldn't be too hard, and would definitely be slick!

Just need to run bars down the middle of it that bolt to where the cam caps are

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 04:33 pm UTC

Well, there's already that tool, euro export or whoever it is that makes it, so not sure how you could work off of that, but it is pretty annoying to use.

FYI
I made one up quickly that did that.
you will need longer cam cap bolts. I think it was just a little thicker than 1/8 plate, and I ended up pulling some thread out of the head trying to mount it, and when trying to compress the spring.

I have one of these tools that I'm willing to lend to people.

While we're on the topic is their a way to do the seals without having to remove the timing belt and cams?

Tryna google haven't had luck yet

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 05:57 pm UTC

Yeah take the head off tongue
Posted By: Manny Sandhu

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 05:58 pm UTC

lol ya ive settled on that solution for my issue (as per jeremys suggestion) when im ready for a timing belt job pull the head off new head gasket head studs inspect piston rings replace valve seals and maybe put revised lifters

Sorry for thread jacking Jason!

Works but too slow for my attention span or rather "ain't nobody got time fo dat"

My mind is already rolling on this, not that I need it but more of an excuse to make things with the tig.

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 06:09 pm UTC

Im sure you could fetch a fair buck or two selling those as well

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 23, 2015 06:22 pm UTC

Realistically I just don't have time to do any sort of production of these. Between a 40+ hour a week job, owning a home, powder coating, working on the heap and doing my custom spark plug covers, time is very limited.

I might make another one or two, improving on a couple little details I discovered on this one(nothing that affects the way it works but to simplify construction).

Construction? Haha you mean production.

So can I bring you my head? smile

Re: Building valve spring compressor - April 27, 2015 11:44 pm UTC

So the spring compressor works beautifully, tore town my head in about 10 minutes.
