Lucky Star Sold me a broken JDM

Lucky Star Sold me a broken JDM - May 14, 2002 10:40 pm UTC

I bought a JDM from them a few days ago, they delivered it to the mechanic and gave a 3 month warranty.. The mechanic just put it in. Turns out the turbo doesn't spool that great, I drove it myself, and it drives like sh!t. The compression on each cylinder is really high, which is good, but the turbo is crap. It lags a lot and doesn't boost past 0.5 on the gauge.

I'm really pissed cause I just spent $1500 on the engine + labour... Anyone ever deal with these guys? I want them to take out the turbo and put in another one that works correctly at their cost. I think thats only fair.

But I don't think it'll turn out that way. Anyone have suggestions on how to deal with these guys?

Thanks.

maybe its not the turbo and it's you. have you checked the wastegate arm? mine was out (the arm) when I first picked up my 94 and It showed 0.5 of boost on the stock boost guage, however my autometer guage didn't show any boost at all. I don't think steve sell a bad engine.. he sells enough engines and he makes his money, his not going to rip you off.. his a really nice guy.. you can mention my name and maybe he can do something for you if there is a problem.

Hadi is right, could be a whole bunch of things to do with tune-up.. timing, wastegate.. if the compression is higher than it should I d get rid of the engine.. Julian somehow had 210PSI on his turbo engine and the rods went..

Steve is definetly a nice guy, he will take the turbo back im sure!!!
Make sure it is infact the turbo however.

Everyone buys engines from him and no problems, even magnus gets their supply from him.

Check the timing. My timing jumped a couple teeth on the cam sprockets, the engine idled fine, and it ran suprisingly smooth. But it was very lazy and would only make about 4-5 psi of boost. Not saying that this is the problem, but you never know.

My Experience with Lucky Star has been positive....

They sent me an engine (4G63 Turbo), my mechanic looked at it, and said "send it back" (for various reasons). I called Steve, and told him I wasn't satisfied, and he had the transport company come and pick the engine up, and sent me a replacement engine as soon as he got the original back. There were no questions, no hassles, and I didn't have to pay another dime out of my pocket.

I'm sure if you contact Steve, and let him know that you are dissatisfied, he will work something out for you.

I have had mixed reviews of them. It depends who you talk to there.
