ACT or Exedy?

ACT or Exedy? - January 14, 2009 02:48 am UTC

I am going to be needing a new clutch for my setup this summer.
Up till now I been using the ACT. The only one I could run without slipping was the Max Extreme with unsprung 6 puck. WHen I took my tranny out a few months back I found one of the fingers on the Pressure PLate broke off and went through my Bell Housing. I dident even know till I took it out.
So, I am wondering if I should think this was just a fluke and get another cause it did work well. Other then I found it to be a little stiff shifting at high RPMs.
Or try out the Exedy Stage 2. The read up on it should hold up to the 600 WHP I am after.
Anyone running this clutch?
What does people think?
The Exedy is cheaper. But unknowen to me!

I'm still on an ACT2600 that has been through approx 6 disks, ACT street disk, and ACT Flywheel.
Good enough for me to run 10's.

I'm happy with ACT and may just step up to an ACT 2900 and street disk, though I am pretty confident my current setup will still be fine for low 10's.

Clutch adjustment and proper engagement are key to making a clutch last long, hold the power, and shift good at high rpm's wink

well I have the fidenza flywheel. And if I do go with the ACT again this year, it will be with a SPRUNG 6 puck. Get rid of some of that hard hit you get on a launch. Just a little cushin!!!

does anyone know if there are twin disc clutches for the 6bolt or was that just for 7's?

2600PP, street disc and fidanza 11 pounder here.
I can run the car all day and not even a little sliping.

432 of torque no problem.

I ahev no experience on the exedy, but I would go for the twin.

Wow, although probably worth it. That twin disc will cost me 2 grand for a 6 bolt by the time I get it.
Maybe next year lol..
I think I will get another ACT Max Extreme with a sprung 6 puck. $600 bucks is way cheaper and more in the budget to finish off the build this year!

The Exedy stage 2, isn't that their 3 puck disk? If so I'm pretty sure it won't take the kind of abuse your looking at putting it through. Those would be more like a CFDF clutch, good for cars around the 400whp range. I've never ran ACT but I hear the 2900PP actually has lighter pedal pressure then the 2600, so maybe something to consider? I'm going to give the Fidanza 4.3 a try this year. Its a sprung 6 puck ceramic as well.....

I tried that clutch 2 years ago. It slipped. Bad. As for the 2900, that is the Max Extreme. Which is what I had last year. And I guess I will go with this year. Seems to of worked out for me.

I agree. But I am hoping the Spring 6 puck will help a little.

I've seen used twin discs go for as low as $700. While they are a bitch to learn to launch with, they shift awesome and will not slip a bit. PTT or Quartermaster would do. Stay away from that purple one above.

I know of a twin disk for a good price--- 700 us let me know its freshly rebuilt with 0 km on it

Re: ACT or Exedy? - January 15, 2009 01:53 pm UTC

Really. Is this a private sale? I can get me another ACT set up for that price CDN. But if he will do a bit better I may take it.
Even though its rebuilt, its the used part thats getting me for that price.
It is for a 6 Bolt AWD?

Shaun Little's car down my way has a twin-disc, Troy. But I'm not sure which one it is or if he's 'tested' it out. I can ask him for the details if you'd want, but I don't think he's ever had any sort of 'budget' set for that car...

Re: ACT or Exedy? - January 15, 2009 03:33 pm UTC

I know shawn well. We have traded parts back and forth.
And your right. When it comes to him, budget dont much matter. Whatever part he needs, he researches it and gets the best part possible. And dont ask about the price.
Great person to know also, cause every year they come out with something better for his car, so he will sell the barely used part off of his car so he can upgrade.
And he never drives the damn thing. Which frustrates the hell outta me! And its not even my car lol...

He's never had it running long enough TO drive it. wink

He's a distant cousin of mine. I think my favourite moment was after he'd rebuild Scharok's car and showed me the engine.

"That's a brand new timing belt? Where's you get it from, Shawn?"
"NAPA."
"I can tell. There's two 1/2" cracks through it already! You need to change it for an OEM or Contibelt, NOW."
"Nah. NAPA's good stuff. It'll hold."

A few weeks later I asked a mutual friend why I hadn't seen the car on the road. "Timing belt broke or something..."

He's had to rebuild that engine more times than I can count. wink

Oh does he ever. Last summer he completly built up an engine only to have something in the bottom end fail. And it only made it to the dyno. But it did score somewheres around 520 FWHP. I lent him my welded coupler so he could take it to NB. Says he will never go there again lol...
He claims something in the engine was at fault.. I am sure it was.
This past summer he built another. Got a guy from the states to tune it. Worked best it ever had. Got to the track. The ignition broke down. So he took it home, took the engine apart, sold off the internals to build it up with even better gear... Personaly I am not even sure there is better then what he already had!

Re: ACT or Exedy? - January 16, 2009 02:25 am UTC

Yes it is a 6 bolt and a private sale, the guy is a wiseman on tuners and I have personally bought a ton of stuff from him, he does not mess around. I'll see if he will work on the price for me.

Re: ACT or Exedy? - January 16, 2009 12:40 pm UTC

That was the last I saw it. Buddy was coming up to tune the AEM EMS for him, so he was only running 7 psi. The car was STILL impressive, and he was just babying it.

I don't think he'll rest until he matures (yeah, right! *Laugh*) or he gets to >600whp.

Re: ACT or Exedy? - January 16, 2009 01:38 pm UTC

Thanks. That would help a lot. I am intereted.
And Troy, he might of been close to 600 whp. He was at 520 2 summers ago. And he says it feels stronger this past supper. But at that power level, its hard to go by that.
