GST Tranny limits VS GSX/TSI - September 16, 2011 06:23 pm UTC

I hope you guys can school on strength characteristc between 2G AWD vs 2G FWD trannys (turbo models).

How much torque can my 99 GST handle before braking? She is not used on the track just occasional highway/street pulls.

Let me know
Thanks

INFINITE!!!
Seriously.. You aren't beating the crap out of it on launches and 1-2 shifts as is done with an AWD trans, but if you try that type of stuff it will blow up even under stock power due to wheel hop.

If you are already moving and you give it too much power, the wheels will break loose before the tranny blows up. Just let off when you lose traction.

Disclaimer: This was a general comparison between AWD and FWD trans. I don't know if the 2G FWD trans has a particular weakness.

Thanks Rob,
Is that true that 2G GST trannys are same as GS/RS/ESi ?

As far as I know Alex, that is true. It is the same as the ESi.

I think as Rob mentioned, as long as you are not beating on it, you'll be fine. When my wheels start to break loose under WOT, I just let off the gas and it's fine.

The 1G NT tranny is weak compared to 1G turbo FWD.
In any case, even if ESi is the same, it's not like you turboed an NT. It was built for some boost!

The 2G GST tranny is NOT the same as the ESi/RS/GS/Avenger/Sebring/Neon/etc. That's like asking if you can just drop in a 4G63 in a 420A DSM lol

They are completely different setups. They even sit on the opposite side of the engine bay. They are not made by Mitsubishi. The code is NVT350 for these transmissions.

Rob hit the nail on the head regarding wheelhop. If you want the most out of it and want to eliminate wheelhop, better mounts are a must. I went from wheelhop glory to virtually zero when I installed Prothanes in my old 1G FWD. Just get used to stuff rattling.

Good point! 2G GST tranny can only be compared to 1G ESi/TSi.

Most likely 2G GST tranny were build for some boost. Do we know if 1G TSi FWD tranny is direct bolt on to 2G GST/TSi FWD?

It bolts on, yeah, but that's about it. Your entire engine/tranny will only be held up by 1 mount.

On a 1G, we have 3 of the engine mounts on the engine block (one at the back, one at the front, and one by the timing belt) and the 4th is on the transmission. On a 2G, only the timing belt side engine mount is physically bolted to the engine. The other 3 are all on the tranny. So if you try to bolt on a 1G trans on a 2G, you will come to realize that you have no mounting holes/brackets for the front and rear mounts on the transmission.

Kinda for the same reason you can't just drop in a 2G 7-bolt in a 1G. There is no place on the block to bolt on the front and rear mounts.

Think one of the most common things to go in a fwd tranny are the 3-4 sliders. Alot of the time its from running fluid thats too thin (ie don't use BG Synchroshift).

I did take out my 3-4 slider (which did a bunch of other damage) & I was using BG for fluid. That was making the power in my sig daily & abit more at the track. Was also using DR's at the time.

Maybe you can put the 1G guts in the 2G case. I know this kind of swap between generations does happen but I don't know about FWD. I'm sure there's some info out there considering 2G GST is so rare.
