Quick clutch fork question

Quick clutch fork question - April 24, 2014 09:51 pm UTC

I was wondering if my clutch for is sitting alright. My setup consists of: brand new oem clutch fork, TOB, pivot ball, and it has a Centerforce clutch. I shimmed the pivot ball with one washer. I know the fork should be almost centred, hanging towards the driver side a little. Mine is pretty far out towards the driver side. I have about 1/4 inch play between where it is now and the fork hitting the transmission on the driver side. I can still get my new oem slave in and it's not fully compressed though.

My question is, is this okay to leave it like this or should I take it off and remove the shim?

Hello

Looks like it is a bit far toward the Driver side. You should make that assessment when pressing on the Fork with your finger; same direction as the Slave would. You also need to confirm that you'll be able to adjust the Clutch Pedal to give you proper throw without being excessive.

This above mentioned step should be performed before you complete Tranny final installation.

Hope this helps.

Curious, why shim the pivot ball if its all new?

Throw the shim in the scrap pile. As far I can remember you only need to shim if the fork is toward the passanger side

The reason for the shim is I had this exact same transmission before, with the exact same brand new components and it needed a shim. The only difference was my clutch and PP between the cars. When I needed the shim I was on an ACT Streetlite flywheel with a 2600 now it's a Fidanza flywheel with a Centerforce clutch.

I ended up taking it down and removing the shim. This is what is looks like now:

It may not look like much of a difference but if I apply even a little pressure with my finger against the fork it moves toward the centre a little more.. And now there is a LOT more room between it's neutral position and it hitting something when being pushed towards the driver side.

I think this time around it's good.

Lucian,
Adding a shim has more to do with which pressure plate you are using and the geometry of the fingers. If you were still using a new style ACT2600 the clutch fork would not be that far off to the driver side as the fingers on the pressure plate would be more parallel to the flywheel. This is why new style ACT pp's need a little more throw.

Looks like the CFDF clutch you are using is very close to stock. You don't need a shim here. If you do want to put one in anyways, keep it no more than 1mm.

Looking at the way your pp fingers are sitting, I predict you pedal will be light and engagement point will be high smile

Thanks for clarifying that Reza, that's kinda the conclusion I was coming to as well. I will leave the shim out completely with this clutch, as you said it doesn't need it.

BTW this transmission you put together for me.... shifts so amazingly. Feels like yours now that I have my cables connected, new bushings etc. I am extremely happy with it smile

Glad to hear Lucian. You should be just as pleased when you drive it smile

You may hate that Centrefarce clutch as much as I did. Hopefully they inproved since 98.

Why did you hate it? This one was bought in 2006 and installed on a stock 1g. Was on for about a year then the car sat since. It still looks near brand new. If I can get a season out of it I'll be happy.

Hello.

They are not the best around; should be fine to hold just above stock power, remember they do not like heat so allow it to cool.
You will not be able to replace the Disc is worn as they do not sell individual component.

It would slip like crap after alittle bit of abuse. I would have to let it cool down after a couple launches. I never really liked the friction point or pedal feel. But thats just me. Hopefully it will serve you well for a season.

The car won't be making crazy power right away. When it does slip it will be getting replaced with a South Bend smile
