$1256 brake repairs?

$1256 brake repairs? - May 13, 2007 01:46 am UTC

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the space, I have a 92 Laser RS, and it definitely needs new brakes and makes a horrible grinding sound from the rear right brake. I went to Active Green+Ross and was quoted $1256.44 for left and right rear remanufactured calipers, rear rotors and premium disc brake pads. And in the front new rotors and new brake fluid.

I think $1256.44 is a little too much, I don't think my car is worth that much! Does anyone know any other repair shops that can change my brakes/rotors/calipers for cheaper?

Thanks!
Joey

Just about everyone on here can do this, I changed the front calipers brake pads and rotors on my parents ford windstar.

1 caliper around 130
front brake pads around 60
rotor 45 each

So close to 470 with taxes for the front maybe 1g parts are cheaper I dont know, took about 2 hours because it was the first time doing this on something other than a dsm. Go to canadian tire and buy the parts and then get someone on here to do it for you.

Here's a solution:

Buy all the parts yourself, and give a DSMer a 12 of beer in your area and get some help with it. Learn how to do it yourself, you will save a lot of money.

Reading this almost made me laugh.... you can buy a new dsm almost for that price wow... junk yard calipers + new pads and+ new rotors off ebay or stock ones from canadian tire and you are set!! i don't see why the whole thing should cost you more than $300-400 at most depending on where you buy your parts. I mean give me a case of beer and i'll help you out lol.

That sounds about right for all the parts and work you listed but the question is are all those parts really needed. You have to question all the repairs as it is much easier and more profitable to simply replace everything. Can the calipers be serviced and rotors machined? Even $150 for a new rear caliper, machine rotor and some new pads will cut that bill by $7-800 bucks.

The problem is if no regular maintenance has been done on the car and the brakes are really that bad all around then you have to pay the piper or do it yourself. You will still need to fork out half that for all the parts.

Get a second opinion @ All Star Auto 190 Wilkinson Brampton 905 452-8333. Can save the tax if you can pay cash.

Agreed, Jerry.

If you can get the Rotors machined, pick up calipers (either used, or new), and the pads are probably between $100 to 200 for all around (assuming decent performance pads), then get a DSMer to help. Though I'd make it a case of beer and pizza, since they have to bleed the lines wink

$1200 is about right to slap on brand new everything, when that's probably not warranted. Especially if you can get machined rotors, and maybe a set of used calipers from someone else's upgrade. And everything but the caliper/bleed is about 1 hrs work.
