Are 1g and 2G center diffs interchangeable?

Are 1g and 2G center diffs interchangeable? - September 15, 2004 03:46 pm UTC

My 2G's center diff went. I can get a 1st gen diff for a steal from a friend but we are not sure if they are the same or not. We know the trannies are different but diffs are just reliant on the number and size of splines from out/in shafts, right? I think anyway. Can anyone answer this for me ASAP who actually knows and is not just speculating. I need to know the actual truth.

Thanks alot.

The spline count is the same on the side gears. The difference is the gear teeth on the ouside edge. If it's just hte internals that are broke, rebuild it with the internals from the 1G diff if the gear on the outside doesn't match.

AWESOME, thanks Nick. I am glad you answered as I trust your opinion. So basically remove both diffs, gut the 2G and remove the 1G parts and insert them into the 2G diff. Mech will of course do that part. Just not sure when. This car is killing me.

Mid'91 and up center diffs are all the same. But some early diffs have been found on '92's aswell so the only sure way to know is to check the outer gear and if it has a groove all the way around the teeth then you can use it.If it exploded good your housing might be all messed up in the inside. So make sure to check before putting the internals from the 1g diff in if you decide to go that route. You might want to look into a 4 gear diff aswell if you plan on keeping the car, they get quite annoying changing every few months.
