Bent valves, Need advise on rebuild. - March 04, 2010 12:12 am UTC

Hey guys, i took off my head due to a timing belt problem that caused my valves to bend. i went to a mechanic he told me he can do it for a cheap price but the parts he gets are expencive! i was wondering where can i get a set of valves(16), valve lifters and gaskets? I need to buy it soon so internet orders arnt so good.

This was a rebuilt engine with a fully ported head so most parts are fresh like the HKS cams. Even though the valves were touching my cams it looks ok on the inside.

I dont trust this mechanic so any advise on where to go or where to get the parts would be great thanks!

On a fresh rebuild? You need to see what other damage has been done. Also why did the timing jump? or was it not done right in the first place? No sence patching it up and having the same thing happen again. I would say find out what happened first. Fix that then continue on with the head.

i dont know what caused the belt to shread but the pistons look fine and the valves did not break off, just bent. I was "trying" to street tune it (first time, give me a break)... the engine felt like it was running pretty hot that season maybe that had something to do with it.. the temp gage was not responding last time i remember.

You say you don't trust this mechanic, but you are going to let him rebuild your head? That is not too wise!

Do you know if the oil pan gasket (rtv) was done on the rebuild?

If your belt it shredded it's possible someone mixed up the 2 8mm bolts that are supposed to go directly under the belt with the longer bolts.

That would definitely shred your belt. It's fairly common so you may want to check to make sure before you go installing new parts.

Just get a used cylinder head from someone. You can easily find one for $200. I wouldn't reuse or rebuild a head from a car that had valve damage.

This is what it had get done when i bought it:
6-Bolt 4G63 HEAD:
• Extensively ported on the intake and exhaust sides,
• Bronze valve guides.
• 3 angle valve job,
• New valve seals,
• Planed for MLS head gasket.
• MLS head gasket, (Used but reusable)
• Stock valves / springs.
• HKS 264/272 cams.
• New CAM seals.
• Fresh rebuild 0 km’s.

So your saying i should just buy a stock head? and do all that all over again?

Find out why it happened first. There has to be a reason why your t belt shredded. trust me I've had to re dos a couple of times for the same mistake. There are a lot of guys on here from the GTA. I'm sure some one can help out. Or recommend a local reputable shop.
