Gas gauge always full

Gas gauge always full - July 22, 2011 10:19 pm UTC

I'm just curious if anyone has a wiring diagram for the gauge circuit. It slowly makes it's way to full even with the car off and fuel pump disconnected. I'm guessing its a short to ground somewhere and I'd like to try and find it.

I'd look it up in my haynes manual if I could find the stupid thing.

Thanks in advance.

Did you recently change the pump? If you did, pull it out and make sure that it's alligned properly. This was the problem on my old 2g, misallignment meant that the float was always up.

Yup; Float stuck up.

Drive around of empty the Fank then jump into the "trunk" area to see if you can work it "empty".

Either that or get her back open and investigate.

+1 had same proble after pump install. Had to turn pump assembly to correct that.

Took the pump out and played with the float already. Could the pump be installed incorrectly giving me false readings? It always gives the same reading no matter what. Car on, off, pump hooked up, not hooked up.

pump shouldnt do anything.. should its not getting caught on something? i think the sending unit only fits in one way.. but i havent takin one out in a couple months.. today i will be lol

I left it hooked up and took the whole sending unit assembly out and moved the float up and down and nothing. Unhooked the pump wiring, and still reads full.

This is why im thinking its inside the car somewhere. We didnt touch any of the wiring inside the car, but its always possible that we pinched a wire somewhere along the way.

Maybe the cluster gauge has something to do with it? were you in behind there at all recently? I remember I had shorted the VSS on my civic and after replacing it, It started working for about 10 seconds, then the cluster wouldn't read my speed at all. Changed the VSS 3 more times, ended up tracing the problem back to the cluster itself.

Take the pump harness off.
Put you Meter on the terminals and move the float.
If it changes resistance then it is working.
If it doesn't then it's broken.

Bringing this one back from the dead. Tried a different cluster, exact same problem. I've pulled the harness, can't find anything. Pulling the pump again and will do more tests. I just want a working gas gauge!

Did this today, readings are perfect. It's not the sending unit causing the problems. Going to attempt another cluster, hopefully the previous 2 just had the same issue.

If your are pulling the cluster it would be a good idea to check the wiring from there to the sender just to rule out faulty wiring.

That's the only thing left to check. Hopefully its the same wire front to back. Worked on a GM once and the wire changed colors 3 times front to back. And was on the wrong side of the car.

Does anyone have a link or something to which wire goes to where behind the dash? there is about 12 connectors on each side of the cluster, no idea which is which.
