FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 06:34 pm UTC

I wanted to see how everyones is working out for them.
I have to say I am not impressed at all and don't feel they are of good value, I am still getting oil in my intake and I know it is coming from the catch can.

50$ can here, and it works wonderfully tongue

I don't know about their design, but do you have something in the can to help separate the oil from the air? Maybe a baffle alone is not enough, try some steel wool.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 07:44 pm UTC

My understanding is that the baffle should be enough.
I am not comfortable with the steel wool idea, makes me nervous.

Why? Tons of people do it. There is no issue. I'd be more worried about something that could possibly break done or break into smaller pieces, like some sort of foam/sponge, etc

Instead of using steel wool I use stainless steel scrubbing pads, the medium is much thicker then the super thin strands of wool so there is no danger (not like there was one anyways) of fine particles breaking loose. $1 store special grin

LOL..I didn't even read you post dude....what does your wife think of you lack of knowledge on cleaning products rotflmao

Re: FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 08:17 pm UTC

Yeah the second thing you posted I have heard of people using it and pieces getting loose and going into the intake and stuff.

My issue is that we paid a fair chunk for these things, I shouldn't have to find other ways to make it work like it should be working.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 09:40 pm UTC

Dosent the catch cans have a filter to the atmosphere?? If not.. Just unplug the intake hose and let it exit to the atmosphere.

I have the 2 hoses from the 3/8s fittings on top of my valve cover go to a catch can with a filter to the atmosphere.. And then 2 days ago.. I plugged theintake to pcv hose. And an a hose from that valve cover port to the ground. My motor does not suck any cank case vapor anymore.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 09:44 pm UTC

From what I've read suction (vacuum) on the catch can/valve cover is more important for our cars than venting it to atmosphere.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 09:58 pm UTC

I bought a pack of steel wool that went from coarse to fine. Put some finer stuff on the bottom, and the coarse stuff closer to the intake side. Worked great for me.

I would prefer to attach it to the intake pipe so you also get some vacuum happening in the valve cover, but for the 1g, I'll probably just have a breather.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 10:13 pm UTC

Id put a catch can before the breather filter. I find when just using a breather filter. It clogs too fast and prevents proper ventilation. The catch can actually keeps the breather clean.

olds quad 4 motor has a unique ventilation catch can. It catches the oil deposits and drains it back into the oil pan. But has a 12v heating probe that evaporates the condensation in the catch can first.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 15, 2014 10:20 pm UTC

I always thought that the vacuum from the intake pipe wasnt strong enough to over power the crank case pressure. The amount of air the turbo is sucking in mostly comes from the 3" air filter end of the intake.... The little 1/4 inch port on the intake isnt creating as much vacuum as you would think. If you have high crank case pressure... So high that it should be a concern... Then its gona shoot out that intake port faster then the vacuum could take it. Its mainly just for enviroment. So it gets burnt.

The suction is there to pull crankcase vapours out of you oil at Idle and light cruise. Without take suction you are relying on blowby to vent your crankcase. Catch cans aren't a bad idea, but neither is a PCV. Just stay ontop of replacing it. I do mine every couple of years wether or not I can shake it and hear it rattle. They are $10.

Also PCV supplies 25% of your idle air.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 16, 2014 12:13 am UTC

Oh common.. Everyone does it.. Lol..

I drove around for about 4 hours yesterday... in heavy traffic and on the highway. WITH MY DAD. So I had to stay out of boost for most of the time to avoid giving him a heart attack!! And not sucking hot crank case vapors seemed to actually lower my engine temps and make the car run better! I did notice it idle alittle lower coming to a stop, but it quickly corrected itself. I can tune that out later.

Re: FF Catchcans - April 16, 2014 12:24 am UTC

Not everyone does it. Don't get me wrong. If you have alot of blowby or are making serious power a catch can is very useful. I never have, but I also have never had an oily intake.

If you want one of the best catch cans available, look up "Calan" catch cans (his user name on Tuners). Seems to be far superior then most others on the market & probably inline with what the FF cans cost.

I've ran one of his for a year, quality is top notch, highly recommend Craig's cans.

That's what kills me is that I was going to buy a Calan catch can but then all the guys here really wanted FF.

The calan can is cheaper and from what I can tell it's probably better than the FF can.

I've heard lots of good stuff about his catch cans. I'm going to be using one in the 2g.

I was curious about that myself and planned to hook my boost gauge up to the catch can to see how much vacuum it might pull. Someday!

..and also to see how much boost i.e. how bad the blow-by might be :|

I think we also need to consider it one of those "any bit that helps" kinda things. If you relieve some pressure, it's not pushing as much the wrong way.

For those that don't know, more info on the "Calan" cans here:

http://www.jcsautomation.com/vs%20catch%20cans.html

Didn't pay much attention to the FF cans when I was looking at cans as it didn't seem like anything special as far as how it functioned, it just looked pretty & fitment was "neat". Believe it's just a typical baffle, like all the other el cheapo cans out there.

Edit: Running the VS2 here, with dual -10AN inlets, single -12AN out.

I believe there was a tuners member who put a MAP sensor on his intake and there was a fairly decent amount of vacuum.

I don't think it's all about the absolute vacuum amount but rather the way the air passes the port, just the way a siphon feed air gun works, by passing air over the opening of the port, it creates a quite a lot of vacuum and can lift liquids up through many feet of hose.

WELL I do know ...

That since I did this my temps have went down according to my gauges... And ive eliminated some in boost greyish smoke from my exaust! Clear as a bell back there.

I believe that was Paul Volk when he redid the catch can set up on this car. I believe this is the link: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/custom-fabrication/372279-my-new-crankcase-evacuation-system.html

This.

Easily on of the best catch cans available on the market. Really knowledgeable guy, and the quality of the finished product is amazing.

I regret selling my old one.
