Heater core coolant leak.

We noticed after we started the car and let it sit over night that we had odd puddles under the car. Upon inspection we found puddles in the foot wells and it seems to be coming from the heater core. Seems slow as we do not see it ever happen.

Wonder if their is anything other than the main coil like a plug or something that it might be?


Really hoping to not have to pull the dash again.

Do you need to have heat in a rally car? If not just loop the lines

We run in the winter and need to defog the front windows in the rain and damp weather. Otherwise it a towel on a stick for me.

Right. Yeah that would suck. If you pressure test the cooling system can you see it leak?

Letting the car idle and looking more carefully it seems that it is leaking from bottom seams of the box the heater core is in... I am going to assume that the core has a leak in it and it is dripping down...

I guess I will need to source a core and tear the dashboard off once again...

As much as I hate recommending "mechanic in a can" type fixes, a bottle of Irontite might be worth a shot if the core just started leaking recently. I've heard a few guys say it seals up leaks in rad cores and heater cores fairly well if the leak is slow/fresh.

For $12 it's not the biggest risk in the world.

I am not sure I can bring myself to put that in the new engine and cooling system... I also have not idea if the heater core was leaking before the build started... Just wish I had known since the dash and heater has been sitting on a shelf for a year... oh well...

I wouldn't use that stuff..... I have seen hoses clamps on the inlet and outlet that were loose and tricked you into thinking it was the core because the coolant would run down into the box and not drip down the firewall.

B&B Dixon in newmarket 136 all in for a non oem... already in and seems to be holding coolant in... one more step..

not recommended! If it "plugs" your heater core it will drastically reduce your "cabin heating" ability. And its not easy to undo.

I agree that it's not the recommended fix; they have already installed a new heater core (which IS the recommended fix). I was offering an option that would avoid removing the dash again.

I'd like to clarify a couple incorrect statements: Irontite will not plug up your heater core. It will not drastically reduce your "cabin heating" ability. It is incredibly easy to undo: flush the cooling system.

However, it should never be considered as more than a temporary fix until you're able to do the proper fix.

Pressure leak testers were on sale at princess last month. Don't forget, they adjust their prices if their items were on sale within a reasonable time frame.
