Family Doctors in Ontario

Family Doctors in Ontario - September 15, 2009 06:50 pm UTC

I have a more serious question and hope someone here might have some experience or insite.

I am having what I beleive is a real medical issue. I have seen my doctor twice and after a couple tests and a quick exam he is out of ideas to try. He hasn't decided to send me to any specialists. He has left it unresolved.

What are my options in Ontario?

He is my family doctor. If I go to a private clinic he'll get the bill.

What can I do to get someone else to have a look at things?

You could search for a new doctor here..

You'd have to call around and find one that is accepting new patients. You might have better luck with one who's graduated more recently.

Go for a first visit and tell them what's up.
If there's an issue with already having a family doctor, they'll bring it up. But really what else can you do? They can't keep you from shopping around for your own health.

I don't know what you mean by "get the bill" if you go to a private clinic. But I'm one of the masses with out a doctor.

If your doctor doesn't have any ideas it should be his duty to refer you to a specialist. Since he hasn't, you are jeopardizing your own health by not going to a walk-in clinic. What's more important, your health our his feeling?

I know people are a little funny about doctors, but it really is like any other business. If you're not happy you should flat out let them know and ask them to do something about it.

If it was me I'd stand in his office until he either came up with an idea or referred me to a specialist.

Get more than one opinion! I don't have a family doctor so I go to walkins all the time. They can also refer you to a specialist.

You are entitled to a second opinion, ask your doctor for another referal.

Get a second opinion or request more extensive questions.

I wouldn't gamble with my health based on the feelings of one doctor.
