Oh my god, it's huge - December 29, 1999 04:26 am UTC

Just got back from getting the Garrett. My 16G looks so puny compared to it. I'm surprised it even fits in a DSM. I'll have to remove the secondary rad fan to make it work. What will be long is to make the water lines with al the fittings. I thought those turbo did'nt have a water cooled section.

I wish I had a digital camera to show you.

Well I will try to install it tommorrow. I'll keep you posted if anybody is interested.

Ya, I remember when I got my T3T4 installed too! Had to remove the A/C fan, and replace the original cooling fan with a slimline version. Let me tell you, it is all worth it! Just ask Joe E.... I gave him a ride the other day, and, well lets just say he hung on tight! Did a 5000rpm launch, lit up all fours and let it rip...

Well it's not written T3 or anything. On the compresser housing, the A/R is 0.60. It's a T3/T04E. But I don't know the specs other than that. Nothing was written on the turbine housing. Bu the compressor housing isr 7" in diameter and the inlet is 3". when I bolted it to the manifold, it barely clears the front engine or transmission mount. The turbo is sitting lower on the ground because of the adapter plate. The plate is already tapped for my EGT probe.

Well, I just found out today how effective a die grinder is to remove skin....2 times.

I spent probably 2 hours making the downpipe flange.

I was surprised to discover that the turbine is also water cooled. I'll have to weld a new pipe on the water pipe that is in front of the block.

I picked up the Aeroquip catalog this morning to try to figure out what fittings and how many inches of braided tubing I will need. That will be the long part. [Linked Image]

The shop will close tomoroow night for the holidays, but I'm confident the car will be ready before Thomas.

I forgot to mention how "un-stock" Barry's car is. I took some video of it to help me out reassembling the turbo to my car.

The alternator is behind the engine, the oil filter is relocated and massive. Even the oil pressure "bell" is near the coil pack now. The bumber is only an aluminum pipe underneath the cover. There are kilometres of braided line, but he only retained a couple of vaccum lines because of the Autronic system he's running.

He told me that he wants to offer his services in the evening for DSMers

+ FMIC + Magnus custom sheetmetal intake manifold

Also the install of that turbo is quite involved. it's really no a bolt on issue

Barry Latreille has a T3/T04E turbo? Isn't too "laggy" for rallying?

Re: Oh my god, it's huge - December 30, 1999 01:37 am UTC

yup, that's what he "had" :-)
but he has another one with balle bearing center section because of the 44 mm inlet restrictor imposed now.

On his car he had full boost around 3500 rpm. It's still high for rallying though

Well it looks like I will be pulling a "thomas" on my project. Could'nt work on the car yesterday or today. My friend who has the shop where I'm working on the car had an accident and his newborn son is in the hospital. So I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I figured all of the braided lines and fittings out. I'm still surprised how a small fitting can cost 44$ each. I figure it's going to cost me 250% for 6 feet of braided line and 5 fittings. What's cool is that the Aeroquip company/distributor is in Montreal. So no mail order for me.

Re: Oh my god, it's huge - February 06, 2000 02:48 am UTC

I only have a few things to do on the car to finish it. The turbo, manifold, wastegate, downpipe, FMIC, intercooler piping, aftermarket fan are all installed.

I have to do the exhaust, relocate to coolant overfolw bottle and make a pipe for the air filter.

So that should'nt take more than one or 2 evenings of work. right, I've said that before.

My questions are for the wastgate boost signal. Where should I get it from? Marco suggested to take it from the intake manifold if possible.
Could I run a T from the hose that goes from the intake to the BOV?
or should I tap another line off the intake? or should I simply tap the intercooler pipe?

Well it's finally done. My first impression? Well I did'nt have time to put the boost controller yet, but the external wastegate gives 6 psi. It pulls a little bit more than stock at that boost. I can't wait to put the MBC on.

I really have to say thanks to my friend Andre who did all the work for free. After priming the turbo with oil pressure, the car started up without a single problem. There was no leak whatsoever. no exhaust, coolant or oil leak even though we installed a new FMIC, piping, coolant and oil piping for thet turbo and full 3" exhaust.

I willkeep you posted tommorrow when I crank up the boost to 20 psi.

I have to thank also Marco for carrying 20 lbs of mandrel bent tubing in a briefcase on his last visit to montreal for me.

I might even start saying "Pull beside" now with my set-up.

I'm glad to hear that it's finaly ready!!!

I just can't wait to see it on sunday! You will kick our butt big time on the track but you better make sure you will stay "on the track" cause otherwise I will lose my title of "stuck in snow bank champion!"

Re: Oh my god, it's huge - February 11, 2000 03:19 am UTC

The damn MBC was stuck at 20 psi tonight. The car was dangerous to drive in the snow storm here. So it's hard to do proper tuning.

No piping blew off, which is kinda cool. Francois Villeneuve helped me out tonight since he has a heated garage.

2problems arose. Francois think the car is experimenting some compressor surge. At first I thought the sound was coole before Francois told me what it was. I sounds like an HKS BOV. It only surges when I gently let off the throttle. I don't know what to do.

The second problem is that I'm almost overrunning out the MAS. I reached 96% airflow tonight. [Linked Image]

I can't wait to test the car out on dry pavement.
