Ice Racing - January 08, 2008 04:58 pm UTC

Every year the ice racing thread pops up. Tony Vaz usually starts it, but I hear he's outta the game now...

For those of you who don't know, what it is go here: http://www.casc.on.ca/iceRacing.php

Basically, they flood a track at the Minden fairgrounds and let a bunch of cars race around. FWD Civics with rubber tires to turbo awd cars with big ass studded tires.

So this year, I finally decided I gotta get a car for this. $195 for a 5 speed 1992 Civic with the 1.5 D15a. Spent $200 on a set of used winter tires that were mint, a few other minor maintenance things and I'm ready to go.

Took a few pics of it today.

I'm taking those studs out, I'm just racing in the rubber tire class.

So anyways, race day starts on January 26 and goes for 6 weeks (plus rain dates), you guys better all come out, its one hell of a show and spectators are free.

I hear that Tony sold his Talon race car to Tashko and I'm not sure if Tim Grech is still gonna be there working on the black 2G. Anyone else gonna be there?

Don't forget to get your CASC license and I also think you need to be a member of a CASC club.
If you haven't already joined a club, I would recommend SPDA (www.spda-online.ca) which I'm a member of. They are AWD oriented, being founded by Subaru folk.
For '08 I'm actually the SDPA "Social Director"

Ya and $110 a weekend too... It's still one of the cheapest forms of racing I think, and it looks like a blast.

X2 on the trailer, very nice.

I checked this out a couple years ago when I was at school up in Haliburton. Awesome event and lots of fun to watch.

Randy,
they came out with a new rule last year (not sure about this year) but all rookies need a rear facing orange triangle mounted on the roof, to indicate to other drivers that a rookie is driving the car.

It's a pretty simple thing but, they might not let you out on the track without it.

Re: Ice Racing - January 09, 2008 04:54 pm UTC

O good the pics are working now...
Yep, I know about the triangle, I still gotta put that on there. I'm told it's kinda like putting a big target on top of the car though. I can't wait.

Re: Ice Racing - January 09, 2008 05:05 pm UTC

You SHOULD put a big target on the car... with the word "NOOB" in the center. wink laugh

Re: Ice Racing - February 22, 2008 08:52 pm UTC

Everyone come out this weekend! Saturday or Sunday. Saturday 830-5ish and sunday noon till 5ish

The red eclipse is out for the season I assume on a blown motor, but there are 2 2G talons in the steel stud class, and a blue 1G talon started coming last week and it is a FAST car. Look for me in the flaming Honda, bring a SNELL approved helmet, and I'll let you ride shotgun.

Only two more weekends and this weekend looks like perfect weather.

2G talons both black, one flat and one shiney? The blue 1G is Rob Paciones. I suppose he's picked up some horsepower from the last night I went out.

Just heard word that the 2x 2Gs are racing in Sherbrooke for the big ice racing event this weekend and the blue 1G popped a headgasket late last event.

Hey Randy, you can get a hold of Ben (the photog, benyyz) via PM on the CASC forum:
http://www.casc.on.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=13457

I don't have his new email address yet so PM is the best way to get in touch with him.

Regards,
Tashko

Hey Tashko,
Is there any pictures of you in action?

I haven't been up this year yet but I'm going to try to go up this weekend.
Are you racing this weekend?

Randy,
got the AWD itch yet? wink

Re: Ice Racing - March 06, 2008 07:55 pm UTC

Gonna keep the Honda and try street studs next year. After seeing the DSM's break almost every single week (aside from Tashko's) I think I will stick to reliability and parts availability. I was 1 out of 4 people in my class of 30+ to not miss a single race.

Only issue all season was a water pump and a set of plugs and wires. Not bad for a 18 year old car with 440,000 worth $195.
