Re: Well ? - July 23, 2001 11:07 pm UTC

Well, if you wanna take the time to read all this [Linked Image]

here is my 20 minutes of fame...

Friday started out late, left the motel shortly after nine, picked up some McDonalds, and headed out to NRP. 225 racers all waiting for a run. Staging lanes are full!! I put $10 worth of 110 octane leaded race gas in the tank (it was empty). Hop in line, and while we wait a grey 1g hits the wall [Linked Image] 45 minute later I finally get a run.

Good launch, hit 2nd, hit third...then POP...dash lights up, car shuts off...I run a 14.1 @ 84 mph and have a heart attack. Car won't start. Check the t-belt, its ok. Try cranking it again, nope. Check the fuel pump rewire fuse...its blown, and melted. MacGyver it back together. Hit the pits and fix it a bit more permanently. Hit the lanes again...now its eliminations time. But not for my class [Linked Image]

I wait for them to call DS Eliminator. I line up and run a 12.9 @107 on 20psi ( I also won that race!). Back in the 12's was what I was hoping for! I zip off the track grounds and head for the side street at the back of the track. A couple of 3rd gear pulls and a crank of the EVC...24psi yeah BABY!. Hop back in the staging lanes as they called us up again.
I stage against Jon Stough (old FWD guy, now owns an AWD). He beats me off the line (I hate pro trees) and keeps it till the end. Grab my timeslip (12.7 @109) but the lady says there was a problem with Jon's lane, it didn't record a time...so we have to run again.
We stage, and I get him off the line, and hold it all the way!!! another 12.7 [Linked Image] I'm happy that lady luck smiled on me.

Next round, I have to run one of the guys who works at Buschur's. Steve and I have almost identical mods. He is a good guy, we shake hands and stage. I figure he would spank me...as he had just dynoed the day before (~370 at the wheels). Another good 5000rpm stutterbox launch...and I got him! 12.54 @110. I am now in the finals!! of DS eliminator! I'm like...WTF? [Linked Image] but smiling.

Final round was against Mike Rizzotti. He had run a personal best of 11.65 earlier in the day, so I know 2nd is all I'm gonna get. While waiting in the staging lanes for our turn, I pop the hood and draw a crowd. I love that sh!t! Some guys ask me if I could pop the hatch. Sure thing! I open it to show off the computer, the aluminum toolbox, fire extinguisher, sub box (LOL) These guys are freaking...why is all that sh!t in your car while your racing? LOL, why would I wanna take it out tongue

so its now our turn to run...we stage. I launch good, get him off the line, hit 2nd, 3rd, 4th and he is no where to be seen so I carry on to win!!!

I won DS Eliminator!!!!!!

Turns out Mike busted his T-case...oh well, thats racing.

so ca.dsm.org is the new home of the 2001 DS Eliminator champ.

sh!t luck, maybe but I'm very happy to have a trophy for drag racing for a change [Linked Image]

Nothing Broke, all is well, and the car is hauling ass...too bad my shifting sucks! I know there is an 11 in this setup, but not with me driving it tongue

here is a link to the pick from the final round

well, anything with a FMIC or external WG has to be in this category...unless you try for the quick 8.

Well I think we all had a great time. For me it was the best, I won my class in the autocross and got a set of kumho for doing so. I all so did the 1/4M in 13.8 with a 60' of 1.8 and it was my first time for that.To bad for the ones that could not go hope you can come next year.

Way to go CANUCKS!!! just as I was saying in the other post... "whats wrong with us canadians getting into the 10's and 9's with our talons"

Now the boys bring back all the trophies!

Another question: What makes you in the quick 8 class?

And if you aren't in the quick 8 class or in the DS Eliminator, what are you in? (the extremely slow class?)

Yes! Next year, we need to see more of you... Nino included. [Linked Image]

It was fun... I finally got some of my mods installed, but only got one run in before having to run off and rescue an Indystar with the trailer & jeep. [Linked Image]

But, that one run, after not having been at the track since LAST August, I pulled a 13.4s and was .99v o2 readings all the way down the track... so good things are in store for the Mongoose... [Linked Image]

It was fun... who knew that 40oz of beer would be $2, right Craig? who could resist! [Linked Image]

Re: Well ? - July 24, 2001 04:31 pm UTC

Nothing fabulous for me. I didn't want to run the car at first but decided to go Bracket racing, just for fun, since I'm not bad at this stuff anyway...

I was running with a cat converter (didn't want any trouble and it's nicer to the environement) and didn't manage less than 12.65 at 110MPH, at 20psi... It was HOT and the car was way down on power. But bracket racing is for consitency, not low ETs.

Won 1st.
Won 2nd.
Won 3rd (byrun).
Lost 4th, couldn't shift 2nd!!!

2nd gear syncro is pretty much dead, but it's been bad since sping... So now, it's really time for a rebuilt!

It was fun, but for us kebekers, it's FAR! More than 1000km from Montreal.

Congrats to Mark for his trophee!!!

Congrats to all who attended and made the rest of us (much further away than 1000 kms) proud!

Re: Well ? - July 24, 2001 05:57 pm UTC

Sounds like it was a great time. PPG, nice work. I would have loved to go but my life is a constant Monday moring. I'm lucky to drive the Talon once/month to the Solo 1 races and I can't make all of those either. I recall 2 years ago the shootout was a hoot, bacon gravy and all. First time on the 1/4 mile in bracket racing. I won 4 or 5 races in a row with only 5 cars left from 80, then lost. I was pissed that some guy got two buys in a row. I understand sometimes someone gets a buy, but the same guy 2 runs, back to back! They handed him a top 3 finish. One more win and I would have had at least 3rd place. Anyway, old sour grapes. Maybe next year I will be able to attend and so will Marco. In Marco's defence, he has been racing in London, New Jersey and Montreal 3 weekends in a row, running 10s in the RX7 and his Talon isn't ready. He also has a very busy 6-7 day/week, 16 hours/day business to run. He could have brought the RX7 for the import day. I'm sure next year he will attend.

I had a great time too... thank gawd the Gull has a pool! the heat down there was brutal

PPG drove like a champ and opened quite the can of "whooop-a$$" in the DS Eliminator!! I hope the pics turn out [Linked Image]

I didn't get the opportunity to watch any of the auto-x but congrats to our crazy-canuks for taking quite a number of the prizes!

alas, there were no 'drunken mods' by me this year (to the dismay of many of the 'motel posse')...but I couldn't resist spending $6 on the last nite we were there after discovering those freakin HUGE 40oz beers at the Dairy Mart were only 2bux!! [Linked Image] <hick!>

Re: Well ? - July 24, 2001 11:03 pm UTC

I too had a blast this year. It couldnt be a DSM shootout without someones car breaking before the shootout. Unfortunately, this year it was mine. So I tagged along with Fred and missed out on the races, oh well there is always next year.

It was great meeting alot of new faces and seeing old ones at the motel. The indystars guys (Indiana) were also very nice, we had a blast the last night just sitting around and chatting. And the 40's werent bad at all. Same thing next year eh Craig [Linked Image]

Sunday was an import event and being from windsor me and Fred had the chance to stick around. It was a really good event, tons of cars and alot of vendors. Oh and a free lunch buffet made it THAT much better.

Overall an awesome weekend. Cannot wait for next year.

Re: Well ? - July 25, 2001 04:25 am UTC

Congrats Mark.

I'm one of the newbies to the group (moving back to Canada in August) so I was pretty pumped to see such a strong showing from the CADSM.

Your car is great... I heard more comments about the purple plymouth than any other car that weekend.

We've got pictures of your car on the Minnesota DSM site and I think we even have the video of one of your final run - I'll have to check and confirm that.

For those that weren't there on Sunday for the Sport Compact Nationals... the DSM's took up all but two of the spots in the quick 8. It was an impressive showing with a majority of DSM's in the fastest 3 categories.

Take Care and I look forward to meeting more of you in the near future.

Dave.

1000 kms is far?

2000 kms is far?

3000 kms is far?

If memory serves, MapQuest showed ~3600kms from Edmonton to Norwalk. I actually ahd considered trying it out.

Next Year I think I'm going to fly out. I don't think a plane ticket would be that bad...

Re: Well ? - July 27, 2001 02:16 pm UTC

My son Jordin and I really enjoyed the Shootout this year, having decided to attend at the last minute. Thankfully we got home without incident this time.
Thanks to Damian and the guys with the IndyStars for helping me bleed and adjust my clutch Thurs. night.
Craig's T'Shirts were great, thanks Craig.
Congrats to all the participants, especially the winners.
Talking about travelling a long distance to attend the Shootout, Andria and Kevin flew into Ohio from Sackatchewan. They must take the prize for being the Canadian DSMers travelling the farthest.
I have put together a 7 min. video of the Shootout, comprised of video and still images. It includes coverage of the racing on Fri., awards at Buschur's Fri. evening and the Autocross and Car Show Sat. I made it into a mpeg 1. The quality is good but the file size is 74megs. I would like to post it so people who would like to download it can do so but I do not have high speed access or a server where I can post such a large file. Anyone have any ideas?

Joe and Jordin

Darin, you're further away, but not by much.... Mapquest tells me its 3200+ kms from here to Norwalk. I'm driving next year anyway. Hell, us Newfs can drive to Alberta in three or four days, fer chrissakes...!!! Norwalk can't be all that bad. [Linked Image]

Hmmmm, maybe I'll teach the gf to drive an MT, so that she can help with the driving.... yeah right, not a chance...!!!! [Linked Image]

Hi Michel
It may be. It's the only server I could find that would let me store a large file. If anyone knows of a quick server that will let you store an 18meg file for free please let me know.

Michel were you able to successfully dl it?

Darn, the problem may be that you are trying to view it using an older version of Windows Media Player. It likely does not contain the appropriate decompressor.
You could try dling the lastest version of Windows Media Player 7.1 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/Download/default.asp?tcode=2#location2
Hope this helps

Does anyone from the shootout know whose 1G black Talon ran a 9.90 during the quick 8 qualifying Friday morning. By far the most impressive run by a *REAL* DSM at the event.

John Shepherd ran the 9.90. You can see that run on my video.
