Re: 2002 Shootout - July 22, 2002 10:07 pm UTC

I just stepped in 30 minutes ago.

I shot 3 rolls of film (24 shots each). They'll be done tomorrow so I'll scan most of them and toss them up for viewing by friday.

All in all it was a great weekend. Lots of drunken sh!t talking at the motel during the nights. smile

The car show and dyno pulls at Buschurs were great, although we all expected a bigger turnout for the show. There were about 12 cars which entered, and at least another 20 that were parked around the building for the dyno pulls.

Buschur had just finished building an engine, and after letting it idle for 10 or 15 minutes they tossed it on the dyno and made 603whp at the end... quite impressive. Their RWD car dyno'd something like 750 on juice, and around 550 without... watching the car on the strip was amazing, that thing FLIES.

I wasn't paying much attention to the actual results in the different classes, so I can't post those up.

We had the whole motel to ourselves, and the Indy Stars guys showed up on friday nights. There were about 20 DSMs at our motel alone.

I just read that someone at the Gull driving a Laser broke an axle, unsure of who exactly. But later in the post the guy said a special thanks to the CA.DSM guys. Good to see you guys showed a lot of class, not like the guys who where chased at gunpoint(rumor) for stealing an Arby's sign. Also you guys had a nice little setup at Buschur's with PPG's car and the tent and CA.DSM banner. I have already amassed 306 shootout, 41 girls of the shootout and 19 video's from various sources.

Re: 2002 Shootout - July 23, 2002 02:35 am UTC

It was one of the Indy Star cars that broke his Tranny, and also had attempted to replace his CV shaft earlier in the weekend (not without impact tools) TONS of metal fell out of the tranny when it had been opened up. Steve Kinnard came through with his electrical impact gun for this task. Seems that it's become an Idy Star tradition to rip up a tranny and tear it apart in The Gull parking lot.
Personally the car and myself ran a personal best despite track temps soaring well into the 100+ mark.
Did bunch of shopping at the S.O. as well seems I had something to install each night I returned.
Some people were dissapointed with results but overall I believe we had a great time and all learned some valubale DSM info that should make our cars go a little or a bunch faster in the future...

I had a great time! I took fourth in my class at the autocross. Next year I'll remember sun screen and to win 1st in the autocross.

Next year I'll remember to bring a helmet and whoop blow-off monkey's ass in the autocross, just like I did on the highway.

The fastest I ran was a 14.95 at 12 psi with a stock 2G.

Mark rumor has it you pulle dsome fairly impressive numbers on the dyno. 355.7 HP and 285.9 Torque. I came across a pic of your dyno sheet and I see you put the switchable JDM to work as well.

Know what the worst thing is? He was pissed at the results!!! what a punk mad

He (and just about everyone else at the shop, including David Buschur himself) was expecting over 400 at the wheels... but a leak prevented him to push over 20psi so he was pretty much dead in the water.

Re: 2002 Shootout - July 26, 2002 01:34 am UTC

Well, yes I did get 355hp/288ft/lbs at 18lbs creeping to 20lbs. I'm not unhappy with the number, I'm unhappy at the fact that I couldn't run 25-26psi.

Below is a breif summary of the weekend.

------------------------------------------------
The weekend to me was a topsy turvey (sp) weekend full of ups and downs. Thursday was a looooong HOT drive down with no AC (again). Swam in the pool, and drank beer. Went to bed late, woke up WAY too early...

Stopped in at Buschur's on Friday AM after Sterks, just as the stuff from Meguiars showed up. I just about dropped dead when I saw all the stuff they sent. Swam in the pool, and drank beer. Went to bed late, woke up WAY too early (which turned out to be a good thing IMHO)

Saturday was kinda fun at first. We went to set up the car show...brought the tent (as you saw in the pics) and set up my car. I brought a battery
charger and extension cord so I could run the computer all day. I played MP3's and getaway in Stockholm all day smile Steve hit the dyno...did pretty well even if it caught on fire :-P

They talked me into the dyno-ing my car...We jacked up the car, and put it in FWD. I go out for a test drive to waste some gas. Come back, throw in the racegas. Zip out again for some boost controller adjustments :-P. On my way back, I hit it one more time to make sure it says 25-26psi, yep! Just then I see the trooper fly past in the other direction. sh!t! yep he hits the brakes and turns around (sigh) I pull over into the next parking lot and shut her down and wait for him. He gives me the gears LARGE, but lets me off with a written warning. So I head back to Buschur's and strap it on the dyno. First pull is a 348, David asks me WTF is my VPC set at? I show him, he laughs, turns it full lean, checks the GCC and says "run it now, and if it blows up, I'll fix it for free smile " So I run it again, 355,
but this time at only 18-20psi? Tell David that boost is low. He says run it again and try turning it up during the pull...tried but nothing. Gave up, unhappy with my 355hp/288Ft/lbs. Later that day I see that a vacuum hose popped off the EVC :-( Got a hose clamp on it now.

Car show only has 12 participants (usually 35 or so) which sucked because I had all that nice Meguiars stuff to give out! We even went back that night to try and run the dyno again, but no luck :-(

It was fun to see them bolt together a car with off the shelf parts (stage III block, head, SM intake, BR57 turbo) This thing ran for 10 minutes and was bolted on the dyno. First pull was a 550 or so. A bit of tuning on the GCC and it was 595 or so. A bit more tuning, and it was 604HP at the wheels with NO Nitrous. DAMN!

Swam in the pool, and drank beer. Went to bed late, woke up WAY too early...(starting to see a pattern here?)

Sunday, got to the track at 8:15am, got a run in real quick. Car wasn't launching hard at all. I normally do a 1.69-1.75. I got a 2.0. Zip around again and run again. Clutch slips like crazy :-( Its brand new!! arg! Now I start missing 3rd gear. Of my 5 runs I hit 3rd twice, every
other time I missed it. This is where the duck in my tranny comes from (it grinds so bad it sounds like a duck). Ran a bunch of 13's both high and low at about 110, which was my MPH when I ran 12.54. That tells me I could have had another 5mph at least if it was a clean run. frack!

Go back to the hotel...Swam in the pool, and drank WAY TOO MUCH beer. Went to bed late, woke up WAY too early...

It was fun, I had lots of fun...but lots of sorrow also.

Thats all I can remember for now...
except Steve SUCKS!!!

Re: 2002 Shootout - July 26, 2002 03:20 am UTC

I used to have a tranny that didn't shift, but one of my friend who is a tranny specialist (unkown in the DSM world) built me a nice one. I have done over 100 passes with it shifting routinely at 8k and I haven't missed a shift yet. Tranny shift so good I have to pinch myself so I realise I'm still driving a DSM!

Then my motor crankwalked again reminding me that 7 bolts are the worst freaking junk ever to walk (hehe!) the surface of the world. Of course, Marco told me so and Tym told me so but I tought I was smart, DUH!

So smile, at least you have a motor...

Luckily for me, it turns out that this Marco guy of yours is one of the GREATEST CLASS ACT I HAVE EVER KNOWN!!! So an almost "free" good JDM 6-bolts will assure that I continue this madness for at least another year. I wanna go to the SO next year!!!! Reading your post make it sound like it was fun! smile smile
