Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - May 30, 2016 10:41 pm UTC

Got time off, I was originally going to be in Calgary the week before for my brothers wedding but he canceled due to losing his house in Fort McMurray. So I don't plan to go out there anymore.

I'll likely be driving down on my own schedule on the Thursday night or something, so we are there for Friday.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - June 05, 2016 12:54 pm UTC

I just booked at the Plantation, but not going down until Saturday. I hate to miss the do at Buschurr's shop on the Friday, but there is nothing that interests me happening on the Saturday, so I would just be sitting around all day. I decided to make that my travel day instead. I will be there for the events on Sunday, and ride home Monday morning.

So seeing that CBC will be airing the Tragically Hip final show in Kingston on the shootout weekend, I say we hook up a laptop or an android box and stream it live in the Plantation parking lot. Anyone have a projector and a decent portable sound system?

Alex I managed to get an 11.96 @ 116. Since then i have built a new head that I should finish up tonight. We ported the head pretty good so got an extra 30CFM. Plus I added cosworth mx1 cams, GSC beehive springs, GSC valve seals and supertech valves. I also tuned the 2 step a bit so I am hoping for mid to low 11s. I also bought a Meth kit that I am hoping to install in time.

Just as an idea for people, I have a Roam Mobility sim card I'll be using for the trip, if you have an unlocked phone then you can get unlimited talk/text/data for $5 a day while in the US.

Also don't forget about your 48h exemptions if you want to buy some goodies and cheap booze lol.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 01:18 pm UTC

Jason: Yah the problem I find with roam mobility is no one knows your american number so you don't get any text messages from home. Incoming msgs are free so I just try to limit outgoing and it doesn't cost a heck of a lot more, or for instance, I am with Koodo they offer US plans for X amount of days.

On the topic of the shootout I may shorten my visit and leave Sunday as the wife has been asked to host something Monday afternoon back home and with the slightly lower turnout this year, we shall see. I have until the 12th to modify my reservation.
Posted By: Jason Drew

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 01:41 pm UTC

That's true about the texts but for calls I just forward them. I'll have both sims with me so I can check texts on the other number. Next phone I get will have dual sim card slots.

Mostly I'm concerned about internet access.

I am having no luck this year. After fixing my transmission last week I finally got tuned by Reza on Friday. We hooked up the meth kit and made some decent power. On the way home the car died. I have replaced the battery and I am still only getting 12 v with the car running. I have ordered a new alternator that should be here in a few days. But if that does not resolve my issue I might tap out. So wish me luck!

You can still come in your other vehicle. Don't let it stop you from going!

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 06:05 pm UTC

Previous owner went through 3 alternators before I got it. When I got the car, it was very unhappy about heat and would drop to 12.2 volts.

I made this using an an old cookie sheet just for testing. It bolts up to power steering pump bolt. I have never seen my alternator drop below 13.2 since

The cookie sheet is starting to crack in the corners. It was pretty flimsy. My next iteration of it I will use thicker sheet metal and wrap it in fiberglass wrap.

Also add some new grounds. Especially to alternator if you can. Also check for shorts in wiring.
Posted By: Tim Sedore

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 06:55 pm UTC

Thanks Charles. I have an evo X so the alternator is nowhere near the exhaust. Exhaust is now at the back of the motor.

So one of 3 things I guess.

1. The Alternator is from 2008 and couldn't take the abuse anymore.
2. I plugged my meth kit into the fuse panel into an unused Fuse marked diesel. Possible i could have shorted out the ecu?
3. Somehow the ECU got corrupted while writing to it during tuning.
4. When installing my transmission I had to move my fuse panels out of the way and somehow I shorted a wire

I pulled out the volt meter and checked all the grounds and connections. I dont think its wiring but who knows. New Alternator comes in on Thurs. If that don't work I am staying home frown
Posted By: Charles Lavoie

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 07:05 pm UTC

Oops. My bad.

I believe there is a fusible link for the alternator built into the battery positive terminal. Picture below shows blown Link.

[Linked Image]

If that is ok, there should be a signal cable to tell the alternator to charge. Make sure it's intact. Other than that.. I don't know much more about evos. Good luck and keep us posted. Hope you make the trip.

One of these days I will make it.

Posted By: Tim Sedore

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 07:33 pm UTC

Thats Evo 8. We now how a fusable link box under the hood.

[Linked Image]

I checked each link for connectivity. They all had the same voltage that I read at the battery in the trunk. 11.8. I also checked the power wire at the Alternator and it read the same. I also checked the wire that plugs into the regulator on the alternator and it was the same.

So either the regulator is shot or maybe the signal to the regulator from the ECU is not right.
Posted By: Charles Lavoie

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 07:56 pm UTC

Can you get a 1 wire self exciting version of the regulator/alternator and get rid of that signal wire?
Posted By: Jason Drew

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 09, 2016 08:15 pm UTC

You're feeding your meth pump from the fuse box? Seems like it could potentially be too much draw, the pumps take a decent amount of power.
Posted By: Tim Sedore

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 10, 2016 11:29 am UTC

Jason the meth pump is wired in the trunk to the battery. Well actually to the capacitor for my amp but I should maybe move that. The progressive controller is plugged into the fuse box under the hood.

$3.95/day for calls/txt or $4.95 for calls/txt/data

My next phone will be a dual sim, so I can keep both active at the same time now that I'm traveling more for work.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 15, 2016 02:14 pm UTC

Yeah see that's a better deal if you ask me, you aren't using up your data from here.

Just make sure the second sim includes data if you want it, sometimes they don't and sometimes they are limited to 3G or EDGE
Posted By: Jason Drew

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 15, 2016 03:01 pm UTC

I was thinking a Zen Fone, I know the second is as you said but you can switch the cards around depending on where you are.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 15, 2016 03:38 pm UTC

I've played around with dual sim phones at work.
I couldn't get it to function the way I wanted.
You'll want dual sim 'Active' not standby, and I don't think there are any that offer 3g err edge?

I wanted to use data and phone number from my work, and add my personal sim so I can call/text from it and send/receive pictures.

I believe I hit a roadblock when I couldn't send/receive pics from my personal sim due to the network limitation.

I have a cracked header... No biggey but not pushing it. Tim has a noise. Still driving it.. But not pushing it either. All in all a fun weekend.

Kiggly got second place in the quick 16. With a quicker run, but lost the reaction time.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 24, 2016 06:22 pm UTC

So everyone's back safe n sound.

I got a Ohio best time of 12.7@118! Granny shifted the whole thing but I'm happy.

Then after Jason Drew pointed out the crack in my wastegate flange on my header.. I was done. Seeing everone was awesome! Especially ziggy. We went on a midnight adventure for food and he told me story's of early Canadian shoot outs!

But we need more Canadians so guys get your cars ready for next year...

The buscher Dsm/evo Shoot Out 25th anniversary!

Yup, all fine and dandy here, zero problems with the car, just the driver was pretty beat after the 13 hour drive Sunday night/Monday morning lol.

My bad Jay tongue better to find out by me telling you than it falling off on the track.

Nice to finally meet you Ziggy, bought a many parts off you in the past and it was nice to put a face to my dealer lol.

I ran a couple test & tune passes, managed a best of 11.8 @ 124, combination of nerves and being up for over 36 hours straight didn't help my consciousness on the launch. Now that the shootout is over, it will be all out at the track to nail off that elusive 10 second pass.

I'll have my pics up in the coming days, nice seeing everyone and see you all again next year.

Oh and Mike Lane, thanks for letting me pop your SO cherry tongue

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 01:32 pm UTC

Another one down for me as well. I made it home in record timing. Left by myself at 11:30pm and made it home at 3:30am. I may actually do that next year too!

I competed in the max effort DSM. I did alright with a best circuit time of 85 seconds.
The winner in the Galant knocked off a 75 second pass(no idea how I'd ever get my car to go that fast)

The Drag passes I was yet again unprepared for, boost control on the compounds is still out of whack.(surprise surprise)
Knocked off a best 12.8s at 26psi with a weak 2.0 60ft.
Then raised the boost and went slower... lol

Had fun as usual, and was super rewarding beating on a 25year old car in the heat for 6hours of autocross and back to back drag passes, then driving it home. Getting 27+mpg smile

See you all next year.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 02:45 pm UTC

The big problem with max effort is that it's pretty easily won by a car properly set up to turn as it's a lot easier to gain a few seconds advantage on an autocross/road course than on a drag strip. Most of the cars running faster than mid-10's are not going to do well on an AutoX course whereas any DSM setup to turn can easily be made to run 11's without any compromises.

That being said, it also depends on the AutoX track layout as when they make faster (read: straighter) courses it's typically much closer.

As for me, I am sad I didn't make it out this year but I had a great time at the Dream Cruise and my parents did as well, so no regrets. Definitely plan to be back out in Ohio for the Shootout next year, especially since it's the big 2-5!

Glad to hear everyone had a good time and made it home in more or less one piece.

Agreed, they should multiply the drag pass times or something...
I was talking to the galant guy. Asked what kind of suspension setup he was running. he said it was all custom, "special length this, machined plate that, custom valved yadda yadda"

I could have ran an 8 second drag pass, but my average autocross time still wouldn't have let me win...

Ohwell next year...

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 04:03 pm UTC

Well don't get too excited for the max effort. They dropped it as Well as all autocross for 2017. And any car running faster then 10.99 requires a nhra licence. Also it seems that any car racing requires a cage or roll bar.
Posted By: Jason Drew

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 04:38 pm UTC

Jay there's a lot of clarification still needed. NHRA rules state that roll bars and license come into effect at 9.99/135+ mph

We'll see in the coming weeks what comes of this. All started because one person ratted out the event to the NHRA.
Posted By: Jay Stacey

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 04:42 pm UTC

Ya. But he's aready stated that 10.99 is gonna be the new shootout time for cages.

I think he's weeding out all the hobbies and going pro event.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 04:47 pm UTC

He's pissed off and might have it wrong, wouldn't be the first time. I don't think he's weeding out anyone, Dave is many thing but he's not a liar and speaks his mind, he genuinely seems upset about this.

Well he just posted that he's had enough for now and just left for a vacation. The rules were severly changed this year as it was... And it's not the same relaxed race and drink and party event anymore. Either he wants to go pro... Or he is just saying this stuff because nhra is watching him right now. I think he is going pro. With all the 7 second cars now... Its too dangerous to NOT take it seriously. Either way.. I'm waiting for the " no used parts sellers... And then I'm out.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 05:02 pm UTC

He's posting on Facebook as Well as high boost forums... But it's all being posted and changed hour by hour. So by next year there will be all new rules.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 05:05 pm UTC

I've noticed it's getting a bit stricter as well. Previous years you were allowed to stand right by the wall where the cars launch, or in the box, or behind them. Now you can't. Asked one of my American guys, comment was "probably to look more professional for the GTR crowd" which may have some truth in it.

Personally, if GTR's would be wiped off the face of the earth I would not miss a single one. Sure they're fast, but not even exciting to watch.

I would like to make an addendum to that: If all R35 GTR's were wiped off....

R34's and the earlier ones (Skylines) are still exciting cars.

I am not going to say they should be wiped off the face of the earth, but I DO think they should get their OWN shootout, and leave the DSM shootout for MITSUBISHI engined cars, as it was before!!

If we wanted to watch GTR's race, we could probably go to any one of many drag race events. I go to Ohio for the DSM shootout!

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 11:17 pm UTC

Althought I have never been to a Shootout (mostly because I hate The Excited States) I agree with Ziggy... it should be a Mitsu shootout. Wissan should go get their own.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 25, 2016 11:37 pm UTC

So roumour has it.. Some Gabe was kicked out of the shoot out. And ranted on Facebook about how unprofessional it was. He is friends with a nhra official. The official read the post and investigated. This is why most of the struck new rules.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 26, 2016 10:54 pm UTC

I agree with putting it back to evo/dsm shootout now that the gtr class is so large. Previous years wouldnt have supported much of an event. I still support it no matter what classes are there, hopefully way less breakages next year. If it was an event that was closer to home, I would have left way sooner.

207 mph in the 1/4 is fun to watch no matter what's doing it.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 01:17 pm UTC

I could do without the GTRs. Another thing i was surprised with was they allowed anything in Bracket racing. So last year I remember seeing a base Subaru running 16s going pretty deep. Again i would like to leave this as a Mitsu event.

Most of the new rules do not apply to us. They are also not new rules. They are just going to actually enforce them. Any track you go to in NA will kick you off for not having a cage when running 10s. I am surprised they were able to do this for 24 years.

I also like the idea of Diapers for the quick 32 as there were so many stops for coolant leaks or oil leaks. The event was still running at Midnight on Sun. The rain did not help.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 01:39 pm UTC

Our local tracks will let pretty much anything slide, such as 10's without a cage. Hell, they only require helmets at 11.99

Looks like golf cart rentals are no more after that guy split his head open after falling off one Sunday.

Give it time, Buscher is very hot headed and as things cool down, the new "official" rules will be more concrete.

So here's a stupid question! Why haven't we as a DSM community every tried to set up our own "shootout" event?
Has it been tried before, is it the tracks that suck?
I mean, I don't think it's impossible and I'm sure we have enough networks especially with Reza and RTM being connected with so many tuner people.
Just asking so if you've heard this before then bite me bird

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 03:39 pm UTC

We have, it was called the invasion and was just a one day thing.
I haven't had my car running so I haven't organized it like I usually do.
I think between myself and Devon(he seems to be the organizer these days) we could arrange the invasion for next year, I know that cayuga is our usual but if people want to do another track maybe we can figure that out, but would also want to figure out a cool route as that was one of the great things about heading through the Hammer.

We had our "own" event, DSM's are a dying breed and there isn't the drive, nor the funds for them to do it on their own. If you haven't been to The Shootout, there is NOTHING else that compares, it's not a simple little meet with a few races. It's an event that's taken 24 years to get where it's at. Inviting the Evos years ago and GTRs now are quite simply financial aspects, it can't survive on DSMs alone. The rental cost of a track like that are huge. If there's one thing DSMers are, its cheap, and that doesn't go well with large events. We can't even get 20 DSMs to show up with months of planning for a BBQ, good luck trying to replace the Shootout.

True true...
I agree with DSM'rs being cheap. Not to say it has to be just DSM's though.
A few weeks ago I saw about 30-40 Subbies getting off on Mavis and 401 to go to a meet at the Subaru Head office.
I agree it's not like 24 years of history but maybe it might bite.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 05:55 pm UTC

30-40 is nothing, the Shootout this year had 400 people racing alone. This track has a MILE long parking lot and it was 100% full.

Hate to burst anyone's ideas but the logistics are just not there.

Nice, no worries. No bubble to be burst, just thought I'd ask as I wasn't aware of it. Not to say we would need 400 but anyhow figured it would have been thought of.

Cheers

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 06:30 pm UTC

Our DSM invasion fizzled hard due to lack of participation (probably because most of them aren't exactly running or schedules conflicted)

We used to have decent DSM meets back in the day but in the past few years, turnouts were just sad. Some times the event organizer didn't even show up to the meet. Hell, I cruise more with the wife then I do with anyone on the board rotflmao

Just keep setting up events and pray that people show up but don't be surprised if they don't.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 07:12 pm UTC

I don't think trying to run a Canadian even IN PLACE OF the shootout makes any sense, but possibly IN ADDITION TO the shootout it might? If it were located somewhere near the Ontario / Quebec border to attract participants from both provinces, it MIGHT have a chance at being a decent event.
Posted By: Bryan Lawrence

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 07:25 pm UTC

Hm that's a good point. Find a place that middle for most, and would like to have some nice roads to cruise through to get there, which is at least my favourite part of the invasion.
Posted By: Jason Drew

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 07:26 pm UTC

We have trouble getting 5 DSMs together on the Quebec side at once, it's just not like the old days. It would be nice though.

Seems like most of the DSM guys in Ontario are in the GTA, which is a long haul from the QC border, Canada is so spread out it makes it difficult.

Ohio is far for me but it's the one chance per year to catch up to friends from all over North America. I also go for the chance to see the big guys, the ones setting records or at least attempting to, I can see 9-12 second cars here on occasion.

Re: 24th Shootout 2016 - August 29, 2016 07:58 pm UTC

I agree with Ziggy, I'm not thinking about replacing it but even if it were to start as a test and tune day... I mean I get people are busy, some DSM's spend more time on jack stands then pavement.
I also shouldn't speak as meets for me have been a thing of the past but for me life has now spun a new bearing so I'd like to be a part of the meets more often if possible.

Maybe this will be the year that all these DSM'rs will get their cars running during the winter and spring time will flourish that good old DSM pride! LOL...

2 days of racing. Including prepped timeslip drag racing, road course racing, strip clubs and drive in movie theaters, and then another day of grudge match raw unprepped runway racing! With lots of good places to camp, swim, part y.
