oil cooler lines/engine

i recently had to put a new engine in my 1990 awd turbo talon and need oil cooler lines...if anyone has some, let me know...but my mechanic suggested bypassing the oil cooler altogether..is it necessary to use it?...also, the new engine was for a 2wd turbo talon, will it have any problems in the awd car?...Mike...mike_goldman1972@yahoo.com

Well I removed it 3 years ago after loosing a rally because an oil line burst. You can live without it, but your engine oil will run hotter.

I want to reinstall mine cause the engine compartment heat is so unbearable. I think it can help me also performance wise because the block and head would be less heat saturated.

One of my lines has a small tear in it that only leaks while the car runs. Is this an easy fix?

I will be changing mine as soon as it stops rainning here... If I can do it it will mean it is an easy fix... the only prob I forsee is that it's so rusty down there that I really don't know if the bolts will come out without breaking... I will keep you informed as soon as I do it!

Are you guys talking about the oil cooling line that runs in front of the left wheel well? The one with the rubber tubing around it? Mine started dripping when I put the car on jack stands, never noticed the leak before. Another obstacle for the Ontario Drive Clean And Broke Program! Let me know how the fix goes. I'm gonna try it on Thursday.

I think We are talking about the same line...

If you follow that line from the oil filter, mine started leaking afther the rubber section... Is it the same for you?

François, I'll let you know tomorrow after I get under the car again. I was working on the brakes before, so I didn't check the line too closely. Update tomorrow...
BTW, Has it stopped raining in Montreal yet? Did you get time to try the fix? I'm eager to hear, before I start pulling the oil lines apart.

Anyone know if you can geta braided line to replace the old oil cooler lines??
if so where, and any part numbers would be most appreciated.

I did not find the part number for that line anywhere so I just bypassed it for the moment... I've blocked the two rubber section at each ends of the line and it seems to work fine... the temperature as not increased and it's not leaking... Even after a trip to the drag strip last friday.

As soon as I will have some more free time I will try to remove the metal (humm looks more like rust than metal now...) and bring it to a chrysler dealer to find the part number. They don't have any idea of what I'm talking about over the phone. Maybe I will have more luck by showing it to them...

François, you make me feel smarter...I'm glad you found success blocking-off the rubber hoses. I was thinking about that myself! Nice, cheap, temporary solution.

You really shouldn't bypass your oil cooler. It's there for a very good reason--to help cool your oil. As you know, turbos get extremely hot, and consequently your oil gets extremely hot. It's okay to bypass it as a temp fix, but you should hook it back up as soon as you can.

Also, your question about substituting rubber lines for the steel--that's completely do-able. But you should use rubber hosing designed for oil (like the kind they sell for use with those automatic tranny cooler kits). Someone suggested using steel braided lines (they're even better--but also quite a bit more expensive).

By the way, I'm so paranoid when it comes to overheating oil, that I installed a second oil cooler in series with the original--I used one of those automatic tranny cooler kits. One caveat you should be aware of if you do this, is that your engine's oil pressure will very slightly drop because of the additional volume you have added to your oiling system. But really nothing to worry about (unless, of course, you're paranoid about oil pressure).

Humm I think we've lost each other here! the line I bypassed was not one with oil in it but with coolant in it...

I think too that I should fix that soon... because even if the temp on the gauge is the same as before my engine feels way hotter than before and takes much longer to cool down...
