Not horny

Not horny - May 04, 2008 07:09 pm UTC

My horn doesn't work and I need it to in order to pass safety. I have an after market Momo steering wheel.
-the 15A horn fuse in the engine bay is fine
-the horn switch works fine

What voltage should the 'live' wire at the horn be carrying?

What can I do to narrow down the problem?

Is there another horn fuse by the kick panel in the car? I am missing my cover for that one.

Not sure what fuse is for the horn on a 2G... Howqever, the horn is just a simple 12V circuit with ther horn button as the switch, and the horn itself as the load.

If you can reach it, I'd start by getting 12V to the horn itself, to make sure it works. After that, check for continuity at the switch (horn button).

Normally the horn gets +12V all the time, with the ground going through the switch.

Actually there are two seperate paths it seems. One goes through the horn switch which when pressed trips the horn relay. The relay then closes the path to the horn turning it on. Please correct me if I am wrong here.

-I have checked the switch in the steering wheel and it closes when pressed
-the 15A horn fuse in the engine bay box still looks good
-I swapped the relay with the fog light relay
-I have also now replaced the horn

Still no dice frown.

Is there another horn fuse in the drivers side kick panel in the car?

Come to think of it I'm not sure it has worked since I've owned it. Maybe the guy who installed the Momo wheel did it wrong.

Leaning towards improper assembly of the steering wheel here. They probably didn't hook up the connection to the clock spring properly. Will find out tomorrow as CT just closed and I will have to wait until tomorrow for a steering wheel puller.

You're probably right about the relay. (Do you have any wiring diagrams?)

Meter the Wires at the Horn, should get battery voltage.

I had to replace the Horn twice since I bought the car. Water gets in there and "pooch" them up.

You could also use a Ground Wire and a long Power Cable dirrectly to the Horn. You'll know if it works...

Should get power at the horn when the button is pushed or all the time?

When it's pushed only. If it had 12V all the time, your horn would be on all the time.

My bet is the Horn is fucked. Simplify your troubleshooting by wiring the bitch dirrectly to the battery, you'll know if it works or not...

It's been awhile since I f'ed with my horn. I recall that there were 2 wires going to the horn. One was constant 12V supply, the other was a switched ground. I remember cursing quite a lot about it since I had never seen that before and I had bought a replacement horn that used a body ground. I had to put in a relay and a new power feed to work around it.

FWIW Mike, the horn does go dead now and again, as everyone says it'd be worth testing it before going any further inside the car.

And, a simple normally open push button switch on the dash will pass a safty if that's the only concern.

Guys, as I said I have replaced the horn already smile. The one on the car is brand new. Uh oh Rob, I hope I didn't get the same kind of horn you did and have to rig something up.

If the horn you bought has two wire connections and the old horn on the car had 2 wire connections then you should be OK. I don't know if 1G's and 2G's have the same horn wiring. Probably though.

If the horn you bought only has one wire connection and you connected the constant 12V wire to it (assuming you have a constant 12V wire), then it should be honking constantly. Unless you hooked up the switched wire which is just ground. In which case, you've got no power going to the horn.

Does one of your wires have a constant 12V?

Do you have a test light? You can hook up one end to the battery positive and the other to the switched wire for the horn. If the light comes on when you hit the horn then you know that the horn button switches the horn ground.

have you tried hooking it directly to the battery yet? even though it's new, doesn't mean it couldn't be faulty...

just run a long wire from the horn to the battery, it would take you 2 mins to eliminate that possibility at least.
