De-pinning engine bay components...

De-pinning engine bay components... - December 28, 2014 11:02 pm UTC

In the middle of doing a little engine bay wire tuck and im trying to group the wires together to create some cleaner runs. In order to do this I need to remove the pins from certain connectors and the pins seem to be stuck in the connectors. I've seen a few how to's how to raise the black tab and pull out the pin but they're stuck in there, not budging and I'm destroying the connectors trying. Any tipsfor really high mileage harnesses?
I'm not even sure my technique is correct, thr videos I've seen aren't very clear. thanks

Ate you using dental tools, they is what I usually use and it had done well in the past.

Been using a flathead electronics screwdriver, one of the small ones. is there an easier tool? I gotta run out to the drug store, maybe I can pick something up there?

I used a dental pic i got from a dollarama dental kit. Sure the drug store would have one.

Removing the pins is not easy.. Some come out smooth.. Some dont.

Grabbed a dental pick, still a major pita... they just don't want to come out. The connectors are really filthy, gonna soak em in some wd40 to hopefully loosen em up

I found that if I gripped the wire in a bench vise.. Pulled up on the connector and pushed the little tab in with the pic.. It seemed to go a little easier. I practiced on a lot of old connectors I had laying around.

Agreed with Jay on this one, I just de pinned my security system and this is exactly how I did it. But that is true some are much easier than others.

If anything... you have to secure the plastic connector and push the wire forward the release the secondary lock and pull the wire out. The weather harnesses ( the ones underhood) may be a bit tougher cause the seal sticks. But pulling pins from a connector is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

But are you repinning the same connectors with different wires?

That's what I'm dealing with right now. Most ppl remove the harness completely for the wire reduction/tuck, I'm just tucking the harness and moving some things around the engine bay. I'm pulling some of the pins in order to untangle the wires and run them in the directions I need at the firewall. the rubber around the pins really doesnt want to let go though.

There is a tool for getting between the seal and plastic to loosen the seal but other then Snap-on or Mac I couldnt tell you were to find it.

I stole GM's tool's for end connectors/de-pinning for this task but I just spray super lube on the rubber to soften them up. I will be doing this come spring time on my sh!t box tu

Those tools are pretty elusive, Went to a few shops for one and they looked at me like I was drunk lol

Pretty cool idea right there, I'm gonna try it and some Super Lube tonight, If I can escape into the garage for some wrench time

It reminds me of a street sweeper bristle, for which we had other uses for "back in the day" wink wink.
