6 bolt or 7 bolt - November 05, 2016 07:58 pm UTC

Okay so i need to do the timing belt and I'm at a real loss.

WITHOUT PULLING THE TRANSMISSION i need to identify this motor. Car is a 1993 awd tsi talon. with 4 bolt rear end.

it has 2.0 casted on the head(6 bolt head from what i've read online). i'm gonna look at the oil pan later but is there any other way to identify.

As far as I know. Oil pan or flywheel.

I'm needing to do a timing belt kit on the car, and rtm has 1g 6 bolt and 1g 7 bolt. Whats the difference does anyone know?

If it's the original engine then it should be a 7-bolt, since the switch to 7 was early-mid '92 (and during the '92 MY).

Otherwise, oil pan and flywheel are sure-fire ways. If you have the timing cover off then you can easily tell based on the design of the tensioner:

1G 7-Bolt:

6-Bolt:

2G Tensioner (for most 2Gs):

Also, 6-bolt engines use 9 8mm exhaust studs for the manifold whereas 7-bolt heads have 7 8mm studs and 2 10mm studs.

If you have the valve cover off, 7-bolts use bolts and 6-bolts use studs from the factory. Also, 6-bolt head studs are 12mm diameter and 7-bolts are 11mm diameter.

I believe the pulleys are mostly interchangeable but the tensioners are VERY different between 6/7-bolts as shown above.

It's a 1g 6bolt.

I bought it off a old man car has 101k on it. original motor

The oil pan where it meets the front case is a dead give away unless it's one of the VERY rare RRE 7 bolt front cases machined to fit a 6 bolt.

If it's 93 it shouldn't be a 6-bolt if it's the original motor. Not saying it's impossible, but my '92 Talon TSi AWD had a 7-bolt (April '92 production date) from the factory and it's known the switchover point to 7-bolt was around spring-summer of '92, so it strikes me as odd that a '93 would have a stock 6-bolt unless they found some extras lying around at the factory.

I would double check just to be sure.

How would i be able to see if it's original motor(i doubt the 58 year old man swapped it).

I have confirmed the motor is a 6 bolt. this car was producted early 93

They were replacing a lot of motors the first 5 or 6 years. Would not be surprised if has a warranty replaced motor.

Isn't the vin stamped on the side of the block, under the t-stat housing?

Its right below the Cas kinda right behind the metal waterlines running to the heater core etched into the block.
