The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry

The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - February 06, 2013 07:22 pm UTC

Greetings from south of the border! My name is Jesse (Denver, Colorado USA), and I recently built a database of all the RARE 97/98 AWD Talons. I extracted all the VIN numbers, paint colors, Option Codes, etc. from CAPS and populated a Google Docs spreadsheet!

If you are familiar with the 3S Storyteller Application, my goal is the same for the 2Gb AWD Talons. I wanted to have a way to see how rare a particular car is, based on color, transmission, interior, etc. More than that though, I want to provide a way for Talon owners to submit data about their current or former vehicles, so we know how many are still in service, where they are, how many miles, etc. Additionally, I would like to track how many have ABS, LSD, sunroof, etc.

If you own, used to own, know a friend, spot one online, etc, feel free to enter the VIN(s) and any other info you have about a particular car and it will be added to the Registry.

Please enjoy the following URLs, which let you see statistics about these rare cars! If you own a 2Gb AWD Talon, also feel free to submit information (as much or as little as you are comfortable) using the FORM link.

I have also separated all the Canadian Talons into their own page within the spreadsheet as a courtesy to my fellow DSMers up North smile If you own one, cherish it! There were only 748 2Gb AWD Talon cars originally destined for Canada, only 59 of which are Automatic transmission.

Thanks for the space - I look forward to your contributions!

Regards,
Jesse

Jason, some day I might expand the project to other DSMs. It's a lot of work messing with the CAPS database - I don't have the same skill level as the 3S Storyteller guys smile As far as I can tell, the Mitsu CAPS is an old format of IBM Informix. I have the Index and the Data files, but not the Schema - so it is a challenge to load the VINs from the IDX file and match them up with the paint, interior and option codes stored in the DAT.

If I ever find out how to do this, I will absolutely expand the project to cover all DSMs including GVR4/2000GTX vehicles. Heck, there are over 1 million VINs in the 1999 CAPS database so theoretically I could do them all some day smile

Jesse, have you taken a look as ASA, it's the new fancy CAPS.

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - February 06, 2013 08:17 pm UTC

Yes. ASA is "too new" actually - when Diamond Star Motors was dissolved, Mitsubishi purged all the Eagle/Plymouth VINs prior to switching over to ASA frown

What about the Eclipse GSX? Are those as rare as the 2gb Awd talons?

I like the idea. Too bad it isn't all Dsm's as maybe it could tell me if my old car is still registered to someone.

Sadly no. These are the total production numbers from 1996-1999 (turbo and non-turbo) for Eclipses and Talons. You see there are 201k Eclipse hardtops, versus only 27k Talons.

Eclipse.......... 53,807.... 48,503.... 45,619.... 53,123
Eclipse Spyder... 9,309..... 10,066.... 12,336.... 8,751
Talon............ 13,799.... 10,206.... 2,957..... 0

Very true, I haven't tried to decode the Laser VIN pattern yet! With as few as there are, it wouldn't be a whole lot of work to build a Laser Registry. PM me the VIN of an AWD Laser or two, and I'll look into it smile

There is still hope for you Petro....don't lose hope on owning another spyder..although owning a GSX is prob more realistic.

That number also includes ESi's. I am pretty sure sales ratio between TSi and ESi is aprx 25/75

Very interesting info.
I Actually Junked a 98 TSi to fix up and swtich over a 95 TSi from auto to manual. Only Because its in perfect shape where the 98 was so far gone that a live cat could jump through it anywhere.
I did it tho so the 95 now looks like a 98 as I have always been a fan of there looks.

Good news everybody! Thanks to Jeff Lucius @ Stealth316.com, I now have the source code necessary to extract CAPS data for ANY type of car in the database.

Where should I start? GVR4/2000GTX, 1Ga AWD ?

I need 3-5 valid VINs for a given car to determine the search expression.

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - February 12, 2013 04:53 pm UTC

+1.. Excuse my ignorance but what is CAPS?
Posted By: Jesse McCoppin

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - February 12, 2013 04:59 pm UTC

CAPS is the old Mitsubishi "Computer Automated Parts Search" that the dealerships use to find a part for a certain VIN. It was replaced in ~2001-2002 with a newer program called Mitsubishi ASA.

CAPS has over THREE million unique VINs, along with all the relevant data and part numbers.

Mike, I am curious - none of the Spyder VINs show as being Canada Emissions Classification. Did they simply approve the use of US Federal cars up there, or what? The 2Gb Talons destined for Canada have their own Emissions Class...

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - February 14, 2013 07:38 pm UTC

I might be wrong, but Canada never had Spyder antil 3rd gens came out. As far as I know Any 2g Spyders are American. Actually I think to be correct All Mitsu's were American. We only had the Talon.

Yep, American! Speedo was in MPH

Mine was written off in Oct, 2011 and it was sent to an auction. Someone would have for sure bought it and I'm waiting on the day I see it posted for sale again, lol. Thats why I was hoping your excel file could show where it is currently registered.

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - February 15, 2013 12:26 am UTC

all spyders = true Eclipse and because its a True Eclipse it now becomes American, thus MPH baby, I also got in a little trouble because of this MPH speedo, I'm sure you can figure out what happened.

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - February 18, 2013 09:20 pm UTC

All build dates have been extracted from the CAPS 2001 database. 1998 Talon dates are now valid.

With a few exceptions, all 2519 cars were made in 49 10-day weeks. That's an average of 51.4 cars per week.
A few weeks were very light, producing only 5-7 cars/week.
A few weeks were heavy production, producing 100-145 cars/week.

Scroll to bottom to see each week's production:

* I am currently in talks with a company that can sell me the information I need to make a giant leap in completing this database, for both US and Canadian vehicles. They will be able to provide me with "registered=yes|no" and current/last-known State/Province. I haven't gotten a price quote yet though... Anyone interested in donating?

Click the link, not the Donate button. I can't get the two to work together smile Donate to Jesse's 2Gb TSI AWD Registry! [Linked Image]

Would probably help your cause if you had some numbers/quote(s) first...

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - March 26, 2013 08:16 pm UTC

Yea I know smile Hopefully they'll call me back soon. Even if I get no donations, I'll still pay for the data as long as it's not super expensive. All I want is registration status and state/province, and I already talked to Carfax - they can't give me just the info I want, I'd have to buy 2519 full Carfax reports @ $10 per VIN!!
Posted By: Mike Petro

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - March 26, 2013 09:20 pm UTC

So wait, we'll be able to search our VIN and see if the car is registered... and in what province?

shocked!

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - March 27, 2013 04:24 am UTC

Yep, that was a project goals I THOUGHT would take years of expensive research and guesswork to achieve! Many states already provide this information as part of their emissions or DMV website, some even giving you the actual title number, but the research effort is way too much.

I didn't know other companies were able to do, on a multinational level, what I am trying to do with a measly 2500 cars! smile

Add/dump 2g eclipses and I'll donate you some money your way once you get the quote back and you will proceed to buy it.
Posted By: Jesse McCoppin

Re: The 2Gb AWD Talon Registry - March 29, 2013 03:54 am UTC

Gotta be more specific than that. There are tens of thousands of 2G Eclipses if you count base models and GS-Ts.

6132 1997-1999 GSXs...

Even at 25 cents per VIN (theoretically), all the 2Gb AWD DSMs would cost $2162.75 USD. Just the Talons is more palatable at $629.75.
