Hi guys. I'm finally getting around to restoring my 92 non turbo FWD talon, which has been garage stored for over 8 years (hence all my recent posts on the forum). Can some explain the fuel circuit to me
Specifically, is the fuel pump designed to turn on and off when car is running whenever fuel supply/pressure is needed or does it run constantly? I'm asking because I may need to bypass the electrical and want to hook it up to something with voltage whenever car is turned on. Will this wear out my fuel pump with it always running?

It runs constantly at full voltage as long as the engine is running, that's what it's designed to do. Whatever fuel the engine does not use, gets sent back into the tank via return fuel line.

I believe for safety the engine must be turning, not just key ON.

That makes sense. Any ideas on which fuse I could tap into at the under dash fuse box that would only be live when engine is running. Would be nice to be able to listen to radio with key in ACC position with out pump running. Thanks again.

It's the MPI relay under passenger dash, if memory serves me.
However, that's what powers the pump in the first place and it sounds like you are trying to bypass it?

Sounds like it was bypassed already and he is trying to get it back to factory. Which one is it Ed?

Both sort of. Let me explain,
The reason I have to bypass is because on the stock wiring harness to the fuel pump I am not receiving any voltage at the tank. Doesn't matter the key position. I replaced the Fuel Injection Relay but still nothing. As a test, I bypassed the hot wire to fuel pump with a new wire to connected it to something I new worked (the radio), and voila everything runs fine. I'm not sure whats going on (perhaps the wiring running through the car has been damaged?) It there anything else I should check? My work-around is to just connect the bypass wire to an appropriate landing point on the fuse box (which sounds like the MPI?) Appreciate any advice on this.

The MPI relay is just below the radio. It only powers the fuel pump while the engine is turning. The MPI is controlled by the ECM. So 2 reasons why you dont have power at the fuel pump is a burnt ECM or a faulty MPI relay. You can test for power and ground at the relay very easily. A tell tale sign of a faulty ECM is to see if the Check Engine light cycles on for a few seconds when you turn the key to the on position. Also if you are really in a bind you can remove the cover from the MPI and close the relay manually with your finger or some tape to turn on the pump.

Thanks Stephen. You mention I can test for Power and ground at the rely very easily. Can you detail the procedure I would use to do this test? test points, engine/ignition condition, etc.

With engine cranking you should have power on pin2
Pin 3 should have constant power
Pin 7 is the ground control for the relay from the ECU
From the back side of the connector with the release tap facing up. Pin 1 is at the top left 12345
678910 is the order of wires. That doesnt post right the top row is 1-5 and the bottom is 6-10.

Assuming its a 2.0 na
