I need major advice. First of all it was nice meeting some of you at the Ottawa meet. If anyone remebers I have the red 93 Talon with no mods or anything. Well when I bought the car on February 5 of this year, my first question to the mechanic was has the timing belt been replaced. He assured me that it had been less than 10K earlier. I have had the car 2 months and on Thursday I was driving westbound on the 417 just before Ottawa. My oil pressure dropped to nothing atr the Boundary rd exit so I pulled off and got some oil and kept going. The car was a little rough but at 11 at night I just wanted to get home and deal with it the next day. Then when I hit the Walkley rd exit she just died right there. No clicking in the engine or anything. SO I had her towed to Import Extra in Carp where I bought her and he said the timing belt went on it. Then he gives me the really bad news. The upper block is finished. Well I said to him if you just replaced the timing belt then it is your responsibility to fix this for me. He said there was nothing he could do and it is gonna cost me at least 1600 to fix it. Any thoughts on how I should handle this? Apparently I went over my 11K for my warranty so I dunno if they will halp at all. Any input is appreciated. eek

It sounds like they didn't actually change the timing belt before selling it to you, or they f#cked up installing it, I think your balance shaft belt may have broke(would explain the low oil pressure) and took the timing belt with it. You could try to sue them, or stand outside their lot with a sign that says "don't buy from these guys" and explain to potential buyers what happened. It may help, but if not you can buy a used cylinder head of dsmtrader for pretty cheap. It will end up costing a lot less than 1600.

That really sucks... I have to agree, I dont think they changed the belts.
My friend had her corrado's timing belt and head gasket "changed" (among other things) a few months back by some garage, and they not only installed the belt retarded, but they put in a shitty head gasket that blew, and of course, killed the engine. She called them back to bitch, and they did the whole "dont worry sweetheart, you dont know what youre talking about" routine, but said they would fix it. Anyways, instead of fixing her original (used to be decent) 90000km engine, they took it out, and threw in some dead one with that had severe blow-by, as well as sabotage other things, like her transaxle (no fluid).
Anyways, long story short, she spoke to a lawyer and under his advice, took the car to a reputable VW garage who does inspections as well, and they confirmed that she was indeed "screwed over" and even filled out a legal affidavit (sp?).
Garage number one got the subpeona the next week, panicked, and settled by paying ALL costs the 2nd garage incurred while fixing the G60.
If you think youre in the right, get legal advice, then spend the extra cash and have another garage look at the old belt to determine if its indeed "new". Oh, also, Im worried now about my belt, how do I tell when its ready to break? I mean is there a minimum thickness?? confused

You should have dealt with it right then by having the car towed the rest of the way. Odds are your oil pressure dropped due to something OTHER than being low on oil.

There's a good chance that you broke the timing belt because a bearing seized due to the low oil pressure. Not because it wasn't changed.

Now, I'll have all kinds of time to talk about DSMs, because I won't be busy fixing mine!

Did the oil pressure stay down even after you put oil in it? The belt definatly could have broken cuz of the lack of oil pressure. The balance shaft belt has nothing to do with the oil pump. Was there any oil on the timing belt after it broke?

After I put the oil in the pressure rose back to normal which is why I kept driving. Otherwise I would have stopped. Got a call from the claims adjuster today and they will not cover the engine. So I took my bf to the dealer as a witness to any conversations. Well the deaker told us he would help me with the cost of repairs due to his moral feeling (I think morally he is responsible for the whole thing) so now I have a witness to this and have to wait for the estimate of repairs. He offered instead of fixing my car to sell me a Neon for 500.00 safetied. This tells me that he knows something he isn't saying and I turned him down. Hopefully Ill have some answers soon

Umm Bob I guess Im really f$cked then cuz I have a 2.0L engine in a DL. But the mechanic is saying it is the timing belt and I still stand to beleive if it was just replaced it never should have gone in the first place.

good luck, mechanics who try and cheat women and tell them complete b/s should lose there certification.. Anyone watch that show on global.. ummm city guys i think and the girl had to get her jeep repaired all she needed was a t-belt and ended up running her 2000. Anyhoo the girls got the news to cover the story and was braodcasted (in the show)
If i were in your place, after they "repair" your car. Get the news to question them or write to the paper and maybe they'll publish your story. Its not fair for other to get jipped. and sorry your talon is busted

All talon engines are interference engines, the 1.8 just has less valves to bend. hehe

Well found out more news today everyone. Took a look at my Bill of sale and also the repair bill for the alignment that they had done the day prior to me purchasing the car and noticed that the mileages do not match. A difference of 250KM to be exact. So this means I may not be over my warranty after all and somebody other than me is responsible. Yay for me. So now Im gonna try and soak him for a turbo 2.0 cuz umm thats all I can find right now. But about the news story, my bf's dad has some connections with CBC so he said if I wanna get coverage he can arrange it. Anyway Ill keep posting until my baby is back on the road.

Well the good news is the timing belt is fine. The bad news is the whole engine is seized and the guy is ripping me off. So I used the word court and lawyer and all of a sudden he may be able to help me out. Word of advice . . . Do Not Deal with Import Extra on Carp Rd.
