I have an opprtunity to buy a tranny. Here's the code: kw5m332npxvml5178
I know the w5m332 means US model 1g AWD.
My JDM that has ruined my life has a W after the 332, this means Galant VR4 RS or EVO.
I need the N after the 332, but I've never seen a K at the beginning of the code.
Does anyone know what the K means at the beginning of the code?
Thanks
-Mike

Here is some info I am copying and pasting from the Galant forums, just for the archives.
I am sure that tranny should be fine.

w5m332 means they are for turbo AWD 4g63 powered 1G, GVR4 and evo 1-3 (don't know about evo iv and beyond, anyone?).

nq -> is for the GVR4 (US and JDM)
np -> if the the US 1G and some 2G cars (up to 96; in '97 MMC switched from np to mu for the 2G)
c50ph -> is the switchable tranny (2wd/4wd)
c51ph -> if for the 88-89 JDM VR4 (early GVR4s) and select foreign market (a specimen was reported in Australia for example) GVR4s

All of the above are compatible with the GVR4 3 bolt and the 1G 4 bolt rear diffs.

wq -> is for the GVR4 RS and the evo1
evo2 and evo3 -> trannies each have letters that are different from all of the above and from one another.

The wq and evo2 and evo3 trannies DO NOT work with the US GVR4 3 bolt nor the US 1G 4 bolt rear diffs. The above data was gathered from multiple lists over a period of two years. I have found no exceptions to date.

PS -- As an FYI there are some wierd ones, for which I cannot comment about their compatibility with US cars. I'd stay away from these. They are:

nr -> unknown
f5m332sp -> unknown
w5m33?nn -> unknown
w5m33?mn -> unknown

w5m31 is a non turbo galant gsx

I searched quite a bit for tranny number recently and I don't remember seeing a number beginning with a K.

I've also checked google, but you probably already done it, and I did't find anything either.

New info I just found while searching in google and even in that list, there is no model number beginning with a K...

Oh well! frown

Well, thanks for all that info. Very helpful, as you can see half way down the third post, the code is there (W5M33-2-NPXV 91-94 Eclipse AWD 5spd mfg 6/90-2/94).
That's good that the ratios match and the VC wouldn't burn out, but my car was made pre-June 1990, June being when the trannies switched from 22 to 23 spline.
Is there way of putting a 23 spline post June '90 in my factory 22 spline car?
Thanks fellas

There shouldn't be a problem, just use a 23 spline transfer case with the tranny, the ratios are all the same for the t-cases, doesn't matter about the spline count. If you don't have a 23 spline t case to go along with the tranny you can use the 22 spline one, just swap over the 22 spline input shaft over to the newer tranny.

The only other thing I can think of is you may have to use the 91-94 shifter cables with that tranny, or you can just swap over the bracket on the tranny that holds the shifter cable, and look at the shifter arms on the tranny, one of them might be longer or shorter, and you may have to swap that over if they ae differnt.
Not a big deal though, you should get it to work.

You need an N?

what are you looking for? An LSD would be nice.

The Front diff ratio needs to match the t-case. If the splines matched, lots more people would drive with the wrong ratio.

Actually lots of people do drive around with the wrong ratio final drive.

I've has a lot of people ask me what tranny works etc. etc.

Just thought I'd bump this up for people looking for JDM ones.

Don't forget the oddball C15PH tranny will also work as it has the 3.545 ratio.

Correction to my previous post:
W5M332MMZL : from Mitsubishi RVR, is NOT the same as Evo 3

Here's some other very useful links I found, some may be repeat info, enjoy:

*@#$k, no wonder I couldn't find it I was looking in the Drivetrain forum.

Make this a sticky so that we can all find this when we go get JDM trannies or the unknowns..

Folks when looking for a JDM tranny for your USDM talon to drop right in, please find one with a correct final drive, i.e. after the W5M332 you should see the letter "N" which will indicate a correct ring gear, in MOST cases. There are a few that don't start with W5M332 like the C50PH that will work. You just have to know how to figure out if its the correct final drive wink

Please do some extensive research on the code before buying one from a JDM distributor. All other tranny's you find there, please leave them alone as they are no use to you tongue pimp

I can't even count how many people over the years have messaged me about a trans in their car, which bolts up fine, shifts fine, and drove fine for a few weeks/days before locking up, and they still think its something else!

Been there already.

^^ This is why it should be a sticky

C51PH as this is also a 3.545 ratio with taller 1st gear, oh its in there i see now.

Ah yes, "no use to you" is the key word here, but some of the parts are better wink
