Well, coming home on my way home from work tonight I noticed a rasping sound coming from the rear passenger side wheel. [Linked Image]

Luckily I wasn't too far from home when I started to hear it... about 2km.... and just putted gently home at about 40km/h with the hazards on.

Applying the brakes, I hear this god-awful grinding and what sounds like a "bobbling" noise from the offending wheel. I'm just wondering if the "bobbling" noise is just because I have slotted rotors installed. Hmm... or potentially a more serious problem....

So at the very least I'm thinking it's a sticky rear caliper or possible a wheel bearing failure... [Linked Image] Bug bucks either way.

At any rate... a good idea would be to remove that wheel and have a look-see, I suppose!

Any other ideas?

Thanks!
Glenn

P.S. If it is a wheel bearing any recommendations on the best place to take the car to get this fixed?

Jack it up, take the wheel off and check the pads, rotors, calipers.

If it has this god aweful sound when you apply the brakes then it probly your brakes.

I doubt that bearing would just go so fast. You would start hearing them and they would gradually get louder over time.

Well, drove in to work today using an alternate vehicle... thankfully I have access to a second one in emergencies!

Thanks for your input, guys!

The thing that ticks me off the most is that I had the brakes done (new rotors/pads/fluid) just two years ago. I'm just hoping that the rotor isnt too scored.

When I was getting the new rotors last time, I distinctly recall that the rears were significantly more expensive than the fronts. (1G Tsi AWD) I suspect because the fronts are a more popular size.

Anyways, I'm gonna take that wheel off and have a look. Because of the age of the car, I'm guessing that if one caliper is doing this, the odds are pretty good that the others will be showing similar symptoms...

Thanks again!
Glenn

On my 1G TSi AWD, I find that the brakes are touchy in how they work as well. I just replace with junkyard parts, though. Cheap. (:

They're making 'clunking' sounds now, so I'm going to have to inspect the calipers again.

The slides on the rear calipers have a tendency to stick after a period of time. This causes them to eat up the inside pad. Check to see how the pads look on the offending side.

I had the "hollow rasping" noise on my rear driver side wheel, and it got louder the faster i drove (usually on the highway). It turned out to be the bearings, though oddly the rear passenger wheel was ok. Same problem and wheel on my friend's 2G @ 105k as well.

Probably not the brakes if you're not hearing the sound while you're moving, unless you've got a caliper loosly rubbing up against the rotars.

Well, shortly before I parked it, I was getting both noises... A rasping noise when the car was in motion, and a definite metal-on-metal grind when I applied the brakes...

One way or another it's going to involve me shelling out $$$ [Linked Image]

I suppose I really can't complain though... I've put a good number of km on it [Linked Image]

That definatly sounds like a stuck caliper. The metal on metal is because it has not been releasing the pads and has worn them out.

I had a quick peek through the rim this morning when the sun was shining directly on it....

Looks like there's been some contact between the caliper (pad?) and rotor on the outboard side... probably a situation where the caliper is sticking on the slides when the brakes were applied and not releasing, wearing down the outside pad...

I'll have more time to look at it tomorrow... Sat.). I'll pull the wheel tomorrow morning and have a better look....

Cheers!
Glenn

You can pretty much kiss that rotor goodbye now if you've been driving on it for the last 2 days.

Actually, I parked it and haven't driven it at all since I first encountered the problem on Wed night.... I just haven't had time to look at it yet... that's my plan for tomorrow.. [Linked Image]

Hi All,

Well, the verdict is in.... It definitely appears to be a stuck rear caliper.

Had both rear wheels off this morning and lo and behold...

driver's side rear... both pads.. about 5/16" pad surface remaining

passenger side rear... one pad (inboard) about 5/16" remaining... the other (outboard) NADA..zip zero!!! totally gone!!

I guess that explains that!!

Thanks to all for suggestions!
Regards
Glenn
