Wow I can't believe it popped out of 1st with the nuts off. That's not supposed to happen cause the bearings should be keeping the shafts tightly in place. Check and make sure that there's no play in the shafts. Grab the gears and try to move em back and forth as hard as you can. Your bearings might be a bit gone... I'd like to know smile

The pic you showed is the reverse brake synchro ring. It's supposed to be lose, just make sure you place it back on the gear and it doesn't fall off before you put the cover back. Also make sure the wave spring on the back of the cover is properly in place before you put it back together, as the vfaq says.

i grabed the gears and they moved a little like 1/16th of an inch. Was that thing in the pic saposed to fall out when i took the cover off??
I have one of those haynes repair manuals and it the tranny section for a 4wd the revers brake cone is bolted to the cover. and there is nothing between the fifth gear synchonizer assembly except that wave spring.
Could it be possible that someone put an extra part into the tranny??

Sorry I think I mixed you up with someone else who posted recently. Your 1st gear wasn't popping out was it? Just fifth right? I try to keep my followups in the same thread to avoid mixups, and for future reference for others.

1/16th is quite a bit, but you're fine until you start to hear your bearings a lot.

Trust me, the synchro ring is supposed to be there. Not sure why it wouldn't be on the drawing. Look on any tranny rebuild or tranny nut vfaqs and you'll see it sitting there. If you don't put it in you'll be in a lot of trouble. Your reverse will grind badly and the three little square synchro dowels (?) will jump out. You line up the notches in the ring with those three dowels and leave it sitting there before you put the cover back on.

Reverse? Interesting.

I wouldn't worry about your bearings too much. They'll go when they feel like it smile But they'll give you warning. Do you hear noise from them or not? It's like a whirring type noise from the passenger side while you're driving. Sometimes more pronounced during deceleration. If you don't hear noise they should go for a long time still.

Feed a penny between the gears as you tighten one of the nuts. It will destroy the penny so you can only use it once. You will need two pennies to do both nuts.

Otherwise, you could put the tranny in gear and have someone else hold the bolt at the damper with a socket wrench.

Also, you may have clearance in the bearings because the cover is off. The cover bolts also hold the bearing plate in place.

Fark... Maybe some synchros ran dry and got stuck a little?

I had a similar freaky thing last week. I was running my car with one wheel off the ground one night, with no oil and the cover off, to listen for whatever I could hear (I heard a weird bearing type noise that I wanted to check out, but it seemed to go away by itself and I haven't heard it since. There was no play in my shafts so no clue where it came from or where it went). Anyways, I ran it like that for a bit, then the next day when I tried to repeat the process the car wanted to bog when letting go of the clutch in gear, and the axle didn't wanna turn. Whole motor/tranny was warping in the mounts under the streess. So I didn't force it, refilled it with oil, and it went into gear and drove on the first try.

SO the only thing I could think of was stuck synchros engaging two gears at once??? I thought I might have to play with it, rock it forward/reverse, play the shifter, or whatever to loosen things up, but it seemed to loosen up by itself. confused Could also be that the diff froze up a bit by running it with no oil. It's fine now cause I can one-wheel-peel on demand, like a true wrong wheel champ tongue

So play with the shifter, rock it back and forth, it should loosen up.

PS: I dunno about awd, but on fwd that cover has no structural role, just to cover the 5th gear. The bearings are sandwiched between the bell housing and the main case. I know for sure that on fwd there can't be any play.
