Hey Guys,
I searched for a thread on this topic but I could not find one. I am planning on replacing my hanger bearings on my 1g AWD driveshaft. What I need to know is if I need a press to get the new ones on or the old ones off? Has anyone done this job themselves?
I figure I can take it to a shop with a press to have them replaced but if it is possible I will do the work my self.
Thanks

I found those threads, but none of them say if anyone replaced them on their own. Did you have a shop do yours Jerry when you had them replaced?

I did mine myself fairly easily... But I had a 3 finger gear puller which made pulling the inner race of the old carrier bearings off the shaft a lot easier. They actually didn't put up as much of a fight as I thought they were going to. My driveshaft was fairly old and rusty but the bearings pulled right off with moderate torque on the puller. You might be able to do it without a puller, but would be a bit more of a PITA.

The rubber gets crusty around the bearing the drive shaft will sit to the bottom of the hanger. When you take off you would hear a clunking noise which would be shaft moving around in the hanger. I changed mine a couple weeks ago i used a puller. the bearings felt pritty smooth still just the rubber was dried out.Changed the u joints also and the insulater washers that mount the hanger thay were also dried out and broke.
