Finally found a nice BIG brake kit for the 1G. I thought it was hopeless after i had tried Brembo, AEM and countless others. Well, Baer has come to the rescue and here's the details.
http://www.baer.com/

- 12" (Sport) & 13" (Track) kits available for the front
- rotors can be 1 or 2 piece (aluminum hub)
- 2 piece saves 4 & 6lbs of weight per rotor respectively
- rotors can be cross drilled, slotted & zinc plated
- calipers are 2 piston pressure cast alloy
- all hoses & fittings included
- 12" rotors might fit under stock 16" wheels (have template, will test)
- 13" rotors will need 17" wheels

- 12" kit (Sport) costs 795.- USD
- 2 piece option adds 410.- USD
- drilled, slotted, plated rotors adds 85.- USD

- replacement rotors:
- 12" 1 piece = 145.- USD
- 12" 2 piece = 250.- USD
(but said the price should drop to ~ 200 USD)

I know it may sound pricey... but this is exactly what i was looking for. Bigger brakes & less weight. If i go with this (sometime), i'll do a weight comparison between the kit and the stock components. The guy on the phone (Ben) said i should see about 14lbs savings over the stock brakes with the 2 piece rotors. I think that was total savings.

Any comments, suggestions, experiences ???

Martin, did you test that template with the stock wheels on a 1G yet?

Update:

Ian,
AEM doesn't make anything for the 90 DSM, at least not that i've been able to find. : (

Baer seems to be one of the only upgrade options available aside from the 'big brake' upgrade (which i don't see as much of an upgrade).

Troy,
Haven't measured the stock 16" 1G's with the template yet... seems i had to go and smack the Talon into a curb and bend all sorts of expensive metal instead. : { There goes the big brake money as well....

Stay tuned... the car is supposed to be ready tomorrow. If i have time this weekend, i'll check the fitment with the wheels.

A cheaper way to do it, may be just to upgrade to some bigger Brembo cross-drilled rotors and high performace pads. You still wont get the dual-piston calipers, but this should help alot compared to the weakling stock brakes.

Uhh... the Baer kits have been out for 3 years now. I have installed the AEM 12.5" kit on the 1G with the stock 2 piston calipers. You need 17" rims period. 90 DSM should be able to use the 11.5" FWD AEM kit and 16" wheels but I'm not certain. It makes sense that it would work. On a 1G, if you have ABS you need to drill 2 holes in the alum. hat of the AEM rotor for the bolts on the hub which hold the ABS sensor ring. Also, you need to grind down the tip of the lower control arm as it rubs on the rotor. Its a fair bit of work. I use them for racing. So far so good.
