Did this mod last week. Just get a 5.0v 470mcd led. You can get it from any electronics supply shop, in toronto there is electrosonic or Sayal. You should have something in your area.
They cost $2.53 for 5 leds in a pk. You can also get led holders for like $0.15 each.

You must use a resistor it is 470R.

Cheers,

If you can't find the exact parts mentioned, just use the formula:

I = V / R , or curent = voltage / resistance

Your car is a 12 V to ground system so:

I = 12 / R

for example, if you find a 12 amp LED, you need a 1 ohm resistor:

12 = 12 / R
R = 12 / 12
R = 1

12v 12amp micro LED? Whoa... I'll have to recheck mine, but I slapped quite a few 470mA resistors inline with it, and saw no difference in the light output. (:

I knew that I should have put a disclaimer that the numbers used were simply to make the math more understandable. lol

It doesn't have to be exact, after all, the voltage seen isn't always exactly 12V. I just know that when you walk into an electronics store and see a choice of 500 different resistors, and 200 LEDs, it's nice to have some target to shoot for. smile

Why not just use a 12volt led and forget the resistor?

They sell them at Active components (right beside Electrosonic).

Let's see.... Standard LED's - Anything other than blue, white or purple have apx. 1.8v drop across the die. Most 3mm leds have a 10ma. current draw and most 5mm draw 20ma.

Remember:
V
_____
I | R

R= V/I
3mm R= (12v-1.8v)/.010A
R= 10.2/.010
R= 1020 Ohms Or 1K Ohms

5mm R= V/I
R= (12v-1.8v)/.020A
R= 10.2/.020
R= 510 Ohms

510 Ohms is a standard value or you could use 470 Ohms

If anyone wants an LED and resistor just email me and I will give you one, I have tons of them here at home.
