Hi, I did a compression test (Warm engine, WOT) on my '91 Talon FWD Turbo and came out with some unusual results... #1 - 184 psi #2 - 192 psi #3 - 182 psi #4 - 182 psi By the way, I owned my Talon Tsi since 1991 so far. It has a stock engine and 1G pistons, never open that engine before. They are noticeably higher than standard compression for 1G 2.0T 164 psi, does that mean I've carbon deposits in my cylinders? How could I eliminate those carbon or lower my compression?

Wow, thats high! I would say carbon deposits, but it seems awfully high though for carbon deposits. I'd say use some combustion chamber cleaner to remove the carbon and see how much lower it goes down. Could be that the DSM's for the market that your in, I see your from Taiwan, maybe those engines used the higher compression pistons...??

I bought my brand new Talon in Taxas when I studied in USA. I love this car, so I just brought it back to Taiwan with me in 1994. Surely, it still has a 1G stock engine just as I said. However, I would plan to do carbon house keeping procedure, then do compression test again. I just have no idea why it has so ugly higher compression than the articles those I searched in DSM community. What's caused of that? Stop N go traffic? Fuel system problem? Timing problem?

take the plugs out and use a flashlight to look down on the piston tops, if there is a lot of carbon you'll probably see it. It could have come from many things, runing rich, burning oil, cheap gas, bad injectors...etc etc, just clean it out. You can try using carb cleaner and letting it sit on the piston tops overnight then cranking the engine with the plugs out to remove the fluid. You can also use automatic tranny fluid, it has detergents in it that will break down carbon, I've tried it and it works...not the best, but it works.

Ryan Hutchins, thanks for your reply. I'll do carb cleaning & test again, after then, I'll let you know the result. I think that maybe my BR Upper IC pipe's rubber adapter connecting to stock intercooler is leaking, cause running rich, and having heavy black smoke under boost. I've above bad condition almost for one year, but couldn't figure out that broken adapter. Until last week I tried to clean my intercooler, and found that & fix it. Maybe that's why I've tons of carbon inside my combustion chamber.

My Ross 9:1's measured at 190 cold compression.
Another possibility is the compression tester you are using, my snap on compression tester measured 190 psi and my Canadian Tire special read 170 psi.

Well, I used a brand new JTC compression tester kit (#1621) to do that. I also can make sure I did that according to VFAQ & service manual.
