I thought all Canadian DSMs came equipped with 90amp alts? Don't see why it would be a problem really spy

NT Came with 75 Amp Alt.

You could also have yours rewired to 100 or 120 Amps. That is what I'll be doing when the one I got kick the bucket.

Just drop in at an Alternator rebuilding facility, way much cheaper than buying a remanufactured at Crappy.

you could and nothing would go wrong,

that is if your wiring would be the same as the DSM's.

igher current is just the max capacity of the thing really.

100Amp is about 1.9HP where as the 70 is 1.3HP, that's it.

This seems to hit close to a problem I'm having, I'm just assuming it's the alternator.

It's been a week and 950kms since I've finished my rebuild, but I didn't know there was a difference between the T and NT amp ratings. I've had my NT alternator in there the whole time, and yesterday as I was driving through Toronto my CD player started to flicker. I pulled over to see what was up, tightened the battery terminals and it wouldn't start back up. I got boost and it looked fine, but as I kept driving it just kept draining until it died.

On a sidenote, I didn't let it die completely, I was just worried about the injectors failing -> running lean -> detonation, think there's any grounds for me to be worried? It was really only like 5 minutes of driving.

Anyways, my battery is 2 months old since my last one died from winter storage and couldn't hold a charge. I figured it was the same kind of problem so I took it to CT and got them to test it, it sat in the charger for 25 mins and held a charge.

I put the battery back in and drove it back to Guelph with no problems, but I want to fix this before it happens again.

Could it be something to do with the 75A compared to the 90A that I should have? Does it make sense that while the battery is still being charged by the alternator, the drain on the system just outweighs it creating a net discharge?

A 75 Amp Alt would barely last a year on my NT. I went through 2 or 3 before I found out (throught this site) that a 75 was barely sufficient to run the Car properly.

I switched to a 90 and have been happy ever after. This 90 Amp has been running strong for the pas 4 years.

An Alternator rebuild facility can rebuild an Alt for about $75 to $100 and should be able to upgrade it to 100 or 120 Amp for about $200.

A 75 or 90 Amp rebuild unit from Crappy is about $280...

Upgrading an Amp requires a larger Stator Feild Winding. I'm not sure if a 75 Amp can be converted to 120. I know for sure that a 90 can be upgraded to 120.

So I should be using a 90A in my 92' N/T, it does seem like charging sys is just breaking even, are the connections & mounts Identical?, just order same year only Turbo version.

are you guys sure the NTs are 75A?

I am under impression that the Canadian cars are all 90 and I see merit in it too. The turbo doesn't make a car more "current hungry".

But I am not sure.

AFAIK it has to do more with if your car has A/C or not... The added drain of a second fan kicking on!

smile someone correct me if im wrong.

My 1991 NT which was a Canadian model came with a 75 Amp Alt.

The Alt was barely keeping up with the demand, especially in Winter time.

Putting a 90 Amp made a big difference in "power management". The Idle was more stable when the system was taxed (high demand). Headlights did not dim down and the Vent Fan would not wine down in speed while waiting for the trafic light to turn green.

Crappy sells the 75 and 90 Amps Alt for the same price.
