I found myself in the boss' office today for a review. everytime I go in for these things I'm told "I have a huge raise ready for you, I just need that bit more".
I started out in the shop as a welder and got "promoted" to the office. this meant more stress and more work, but less pay. It has been 2 years now without a raise.
I find it amazing how he can do that. I have other options, and I intend to take them.
Has anyoneelse had the carrot dangled in front of them?

After 3 and a half years at my first job trying to reach the carrot I walked into my bosses office an told him what he had to pay me in order to keep me. They fell short.
2 months later I handed in my resignation as I had a new job paying well above what I demanded from my boss. A day later they offered to match that salary. I said too late, you had your chance.

It's almost what you HAVE to do. I've talked to a lot of people that didn't get much respect until they upped and threatened to leave.
It helps to have a backup plan in case they call your bluff, but there's good pay in being a welder, and lots of work with everyone heading West.

I was in a situation where I was being seriously under paid. I finally had enough. I didn't care if it cost me my job at that point.

Nothing wrong with 'polite', Chris. It's just that sometimes they ignore polite. And you're like me, I'd rather have a job than none at all, and they bank on that. As much as they say, "You'll be missed as much as a hole in a water pail." you can bet that you're probably worth a bit more to them than they're paying you now. Even 'nice' bosses, like mine, are paid to save the company as much money as they can. And the difference is...all of Mike's posts, SUCK. *Laugh*
