it will end for some, not all I joined the board over 10 yrs ago, and throughout the years, I supposedly grew up, and did the whole career, house, grown up car thing etc, but life's about balance. I have fun wrenching on the dsm every now and then, and if I sell it, I'd get $1500 which doesn't really mean much now-a-days, so there's really no point selling it. Plus all the sentimental values, memories and stuff, hehe I don't know if I'd buy another one if it's stolen, written off, etc as there are many other choices out there, but would I get rid of my current dsm for even slightly more than it's worth? No sir! That pretty much describes my position. +1! When I think about selling my DSM and getting another project, I think about how much I'd have to spend to get something with similar performance. Not worth it. Plus I am sentimentally attached. I do think that alot of DSMs will end up getting converted to RWD with alternative powerplants over time (due to the scarcity of DSM parts).

Ahh, so THAT's how these guys up here in Sudbury get away with it. My God you should see some of the big block cars that are up here at the shows. They drive in and out, not on street legal tires and with exhausts out the side in front of the doors behind the front tires.
Oh, and they're LOUD!

I thought what they changed was that it is no longer a "rolling" 20 years. In other words, anything that was 20 years old when the new rule went into effect was exempt, everything else will be etested forever...even when it is 40 years old...
I THINK 1988 is the cutoff year...

Are you sure about that Sven? I'm pretty sure they still have to E-Test in Bancroft, Renfrew, Denbeigh, etc. Try up north of Parry Sound.

That fits. I know down here I didn't need a catalytic converter on my '90, but I would if it was a '91 or newer. DSMs are definitely in my blood. At the Vaughn Mills Mall there was a toy store that had two 2G Eclipse models on sale for $10ea. I couldn't help myself, so I bought them. They might not be 1Gs, but they're the closest I could get. I'm a fan of a LOT of cars, and would own any of them. But the DSM, especially the 1G for me, is one of the few that did everything RIGHT, and for a fair price. I see how little they're selling for now, and how inexpensive it is to modify them, and I feel a little sad. But the reality of being a one-income family without a garage, or the time to use it, is a hard pill to swallow. I figure by the time I can realistically afford a project car, the DSM will be almost gone. There'll be too many other 'easier' choices... And this board died the day Captain Bob left...

I don't think DSMs are going away anytime soon, or this board...it must be said, this got to be one of the best forums I came across, like one big family dare I say. As for them becoming what the 60's & 70's classics are now, I can't see that happening. I think Supras/Skylines/RX-7s/300ZX/3000Gts well be. I read somewhere once that at any giving time 500 people in North America are looking for a 93+ supra TT... However, a DSM is a DSM, I can't say if I'll be a lifer, but I sure wouldn't mind it. It was my first car, it was horrible experience, but I loved it very much, and I wouldn't hesitate about selling my Audi for a nice, clean, and -reliable -??? Talon Just my $.02

I don't need a test with our new car:D It's emmision exempt and brand new...how many new cars can say that:P
AS for the drive clean, I think as the year changes, so will the date. As in, if you go back in Jan of 09, and type in a 1988 vehicle, it'll tell you no test is required.
I'm pretty sure thats how it'll be, because I have a 68 Plymouth and it was made a big deal about alot of that stuff when drive clean first came out. Most cars from 74 down didn't have anything for emissions, then in 75 came cat's, and so forth. But it was said that the vehicle, 20 years and older, would be exempt, not by years.

8 years and counting..
This is the longest I have ever owned 1 single car. The Talon is MY car, as I was captivated by the styling the moment I saw it in 1997, and I plan on keeping it. I personally see myself as that guy in his 50's with his "classic" car in the garage.
At this point I am buying all the replacement parts I can, because new OEM parts are getting harder to harder to find. Next on the list is a transmission rebuild......the gearbox is old, and needs some love.
I want an RS4.

OK I got to stick my own few words. I managed to keep two cars while leaving in apartment building. Lots of people including my wife telling to sell it while as they say "I can get some money for it"
Keeping my 2G around is full time business. People tried to break into my car, when finances where tight I drove it with no insurance, it's got me thru my education, and I receive lots of attention everywhere I go. Also, it's always been a reliable car. In the last 8 years I never used toll truck on my dsm. Most of the time I did my own repairs on my lightly moded 2g.
I guess when I get old I may look back and think I just waste my money with no return except pleasure. Will see.
Finally bought DSM license plate from Ziggy. Sorry it took me awhile. Forum been nothing but fun and help to me.

I'm still around reading the forums. I will have another dsm sometime soon. I kind of want a house/garage before I get a dsm, Its just to hard with no garage owning a DSM lol I might look into building an engine soon though So when I get a garage I can buy a cheap chassis. Cheers, Ryan , me you and ghiz need to get togather over xmas for some beer, if your down let me know. We're getting older, so are these cars.
Anyone here ever thought of that fact? How long we as a club are going to last? Are we going to be a dying breed within 5 years, or are we going to be like (dare I say) Mustangs and Corvettes, where even though they are 40+ years old, people still can't get enough of them.
Eventually Andy, Steve, Mark, all the GOBC guys will move on, and Club DSM Canada will have to find a new place to live.
As each racing season comes to a close, over the winter we store our cars (well, most of us), and in the spring you get the random few who sell off their 5-8 year old projects. Some of the old big names (Rob C, Mike Jackson, Tim Hunt, Nick Boers, Waldo etc) either don't have theirs anymore, or don't drive them much, as in a loss of interest, ultimately ending up in the car's sale. Some are not by choice, yet some are, either way, it usually ends up the same.
Strelecki, you've got your house, wife, etc that takes up your time, when have your tires seen pavement or track time last?
Hell, we don't even hear from Andy anymore.
What do you think? Are we as a Club slowing down? I've only been around for a few years, yet I do remember a lot more activity 3 years ago than there is today!
We've got the few regulars on here, some new guys poking their heads in to put in their $0.02, but overall, it's getting quiet!
Times have changed since 3-5 years ago, everything's more expensive, we're 1.X% away from a recession, economically as a society we suck right now! This is probably, no... definitely contributing to this.
So, basically I'm asking are you a DSM for life or "A comfortable, fuel efficient Camry is looking good right now..."
Discuss, because I know I'm NOT the only one out there thinking this.
