Does your tranny just pop out of 1st or are there other constant noises coming from it, does it grind, does the shifter move around in any gears. You can take a hollow tube and isolate some of the noises, if some of the bearings are worn they will wine at idle when hot. My tranny use to pop out of 5th, so I changed all the bearings and 5th hub assembly which needed it and it still poped out with no shifter movement because the syncro on the gear itself was worn. I have seen other trannies with shifter movement in 3rd and no 4th gear because the input bearing was so badly worn it would push 4th gear out of the way instead of engauging, there are many problems that can arise in trannies but if you have a problem you shouldn't drive it cause if something lets go there won't be much left. Good to see someone from Peterpatch I lived in Lakefield till I was 20 and still go there often to visit. I have access to a complete 90' & 91' awd and 90 N/T and may have usefull extra parts, I can do the work and plan to visit Peterboro soon but its 4 hours away and it might take a week to do the work because there are usually other inturnal probs that come up and you might have to replace some bearings. You pay for the gas and parts and I might be able to work somthing out. Parts you should concider. 1. 1st/2nd hub assembly $260 appox 2. 1st gear and the needle bearing with it?. 3. most other bearings $30-60 each, you'll probly need atleast 4 of um. The 1st/2nd hub and gears I may have access to (used). There are others on this board that are closer to you and more capable of doing the work, so use me as a last resort, if you want. Have you put the proper oil and amounts in it., tried cable adjustments.
