I have a 93 TSI FWD that I am putting together and I was courious about a tranny.
I have both a Turbo FWD and an AWD tranny and I have the means to make the AWD work in the FWD car.
Is it beneficial to use the AWD because of better gearing?
And is there a way to bypass the center diff. Or would welding it solid be enough???
Looking for some ideas here.

all you need is a vce. Which is a viscous coupler eliminator. Awd's use it to be able to switch their cars into FWD mode to dyno. You can just use it permanently, they go anywhere from 70-200 dollars.

I know all about the VCE. I have one for my 2G so I can tune my car on my dyno.
This really doesent answer my question though.
I wanted to know if its better to go with the AWD tranny for the better gearing? ANd would wekding the canter diff be strong enough to hold up useing it as a fwd tranny?

I'd put the AWD gears (better gearing) into the FWD case (lighter), if possible. If not, I'd think the lighter weight of the FWD tranny would win out.

A little extra weight over the wheels might not be a bad thing considdering the power it will have and lack of traction.
But I may see if I can put it all in the FWD case,

I think the AWD 1st gear is shorter than the FWD. Depending on how much power your making, that could be detrimental, as you'd be hitting redline sooner.

I have an AWD tranny in my FWD. So far I really like it. It really helps with traction when the center diff is welded. No more 1 wheel burnouts. And the longer 5th is great on the highway. Power wise I wouldn't know, my damn Megasquirt is still not installed.

Thanks for the input. This is really helpful.
I need a center diff. The guy who welded this one messed it up and now it cant be used. So once I get one I will be back on track on that current build.
ANd the guy who messed the diff up will probably read this but cant reply because hes not signed up. So he cant defend himself... haha..... Hes got a good excuse.... I guess...

I would think that you would want FWD gearing in a FWD car, just my opinion though. The lower gearing of a AWD is just going to be a pain in the ass down the road, you will want the power up in the higher rpm's, hence the higher gearing of a FWD tranny....

Were mainly looking at ET times. WHatever will work best on the track on a FWD car with slicks.
