chris it is extremely hard to say, the check engine light could be comming on for any of a number of things, it could also be a faulty light since its not staying on. i would reccomend that you check the diagnosis error codes from your car, it will narrow down the possibilites if there is something wrong.
the link for locating the box, and diagnosing the codes is here..http://www.myzero.com/electrical/code.html
or many other places on the club dsm page.
hope it helps!

Why wonder... just ask the car. Everytime the light comes on it the ECU stores a code as to what the problem is. If you have a 1G look here to find out how to get the codes: http://www.myzero.com/electrical/code.html . There's no point in us blindly guess when you can just ask your car.

I have the same problem as you described. My check engine light comes on from time to time. It goes away if I floor the gas. I checked the code and it's #14 - TPS. You need to either replace it, or it might be possible it only needs an adjustment.

My car did that too a little while but it stopped now.. the check engine light kept going on for like 2 minutes then off.. until the car warmed up.. Now i have a really weird idle problem where the idle RISES, yes rises.. as the car gets warmer.. instead of drop as it gets warmer.. i never got to check the code, and when i finally did.. nothing.. Sup with that filter?? hehe anybody ever had this happen? [ January 08, 2002: Message edited by: Chris Poe ]

Well, its seems that I have a spare TPS now for a GTX if anyone is interested in purchasing it.
I put the new one on today and same trouble, intermitent #14 code from the ecu. Adjusted it and still same. Tried reseting the ecu, still same.....adjusted the throttle cable and bam, no codes anymore and my auto tranny shifts perfectly now......
Before anyone calls me an idiot, I'll tell you that I did try adjusting the cable before buying a new tps with no results in the positive direction.
So, the moral of the story, is check your throttle cable adjustment before you assume the TPS is bad.
