This is what I understand: Generally speaking, after filling, sanding and priming, you put few coats of the colour. You may or may not wet sand the last coat to even out the surface. Then you put a clear coat.

After all the paint coats are done, you wet sand it from fine to the finest paper you got. Then more "sanding" happens when you use a polishing compound. At this point you see shine. Finally, you apply wax to protect the paint.
