It will work, you just need to find the right info. Start by looking at these diagrams Chris Andrews kindly posted to our local board the other day. From there it will depend on your electronic skills. http://www.labattz.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=770

Hey JOSE did you click the link?
"The interface is conceptually rather trivial, and it should be easy to build (it was for me). If you already have experience with MAX232 chips then this is nothing new for you. The interface turns out to be a simple RS232 to TTL signal level converter. Even though the ALDL bus is more complex than a plain asynchronous serial line at the datalink layer, a basic interface like this is enough for establishing a physical link between the serial port and the bus. The software takes all the hard work accomodating for this kind of media. A different baud rate is required (typically 8192 bps for the ALDL bus) and it is also necessary to dynamically generate and calculate the checksum for the several frames transmitted during a session. As there are no collision detection mechanisms, the results of colliding frames (if for example the ABS computer sends frames at the same time the user issues a command to the ECU) can be quite unpredictable. So we should accept these things with some naturallity, as we choose the cheap route. A more ellegant approach would consist in using a programmable microcontroller to bridge between the RS232 and the ALDL bus. It's program would implement the full datalink protocol, delivering clean transactions between buses, handling collisions and offering reliable functionality. This approach would of course have the downside of being much more complicated and expensive to devellop, both financially and timewise."

All that translates to "buy the friggin cable"
The author of that paragraph even says so at the end.
It cost me $270CAD to my door after all shipping and tax bs is said and done.

I guess your translation book is written in dollar signs, this is a viable alternative to anyone who has access to Hal`s free offer of his Software, AND has the intelligence to part together a VERY straight forward design. But I guess even being spoon fed the info is too hard for some. The only reason I keep replying to this thread is because SOME DSMrs still use the search function in their quest for modding knowledge and hate seeing valid options knocked down. smiley added for those of you who may be offended by truth.

what Mr Cassells said.
Lets lick this thing, if only so we Canadians don't have to be slaves to the border, and all its "hidden" taxes. Free trade my ass...
the software is free, a used Palm is like $50 or so, and if we can make these cables, we can save ourselves $200 or so. I'm sure that even the most well heeled amongst us can put that to good use somewhere else.

Alright, so for electronically challenged people like myself who understand the theory but would not pass the practice until the 100th attempt, does anyone here think they could post an update if they build their own cable and would be willing to do the same "VERY straight forward design" for others like myself? If you ask me, 200$ for a cable we can build ourselves is a scam, and I won't even get started on the border bullsh!t. I'm sure, like me, that others would be willing to pay for your time and effort.

If you guys are that cheap, get the cable from here, its $65 US! with no software... www.pptracing.com You can also reverse-engineer this cable, since all the parts have their part # on them.. its a very simple circuit too.

Yeah we know The design is all over the net. The ppt piece will come to well over 100 bucks after shipping and border sh!t, plus I like playing with electronics I'll grab one when I'm in the states though if I don't have time to tinker in the summer.
