I'm rebooting one of my cv shafts today and the instructions that came with the new boot say to use soap and water not parts cleaner (i got brake cleaner) to clean the thing as the brake cleaner could damage the cv grease. Is this true? soap and water just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

you got the wrong one - you NEED to get the one with 3 bumps or you will loose greese i picked up one from Pen auto in scarborough - there were the only parts shop that had it in stock.
