Argh! These kind of stories drive me nuts!
I know they're separate parties, even though it's the same company, but why is it that there are conflicting positions on situations like yours Terry?
If they were able to do it in the end, then the people that decided against fixing the problem, just didn't want to.
They were able to say Yes, but chose to say No. That's the kind of sh!t that drives me nuts.
I'd like to cut the bullshit and ask them WHY, off the record, just so I know why their brain told them to say NO.

Since Chrysler stopped dealing so much with Mitsu, can we call Mitsu "Satan" now? It's normal to use a very thin layer of a sealant or gasket maker on the water pump to hold the gasket in place. If too much is used, if it's uneven, unclean surfaces or if care isn't taken to keep the gasket from folding, chances are it will leak. That being said, what I see in the pictures doesn't seem consistent with the use of RTV or sealant on any water pump change that I've ever done. Assuming the gasket is the black piece at the right of the first picture, by where the sealant is it seems like they over-torqued a bolt and broke the casting. I've never worked on a Lancer though! Sorry for your luck, Isaque //edit OK I think I see a smaller gasket poking out there by the sealant. That's a hell of a lot of sealant if only to hold it in place!

I've taken off most of the components around the Tranny and now I'm wondering about the Axels! Does anyone have any pointers on how to remove them? I don't want to damage them as I've never taken them out before, or on any other car for that matter LOL... Thanks If it's anything like our cars (dsm's), that axle nut can be a SOB, Steve R recommended to me to use a thick sturdy screw driver in the brake rotor vents, saddled in by the caliper and it should help crack the axle nuts. Aside from that, you'll need good pry bars to separate the axles from the tranny. They snap back in pretty easily with some elbow/axle grease

Sounds like it's seized. You'll kill the wheel bearing (of you haven't already done so) if it doesn't want to move. I haven't worked on one of these cars, but can't you pull off the whole hub with axle still in it? You might have to undo the tie rod, ball joint and whatever else is attached.

Oh yeah if you have to give it too much something is gonna get squished. You could save getting new bearings right now by doing what Reza suggested, if the geometry allows it. WHAT! What could get squished? I was holding the axle housing that is bolted to the strut! What bearing would I have to change?

Pry bar the axle out of the transmission. If you've got the car on jack stands, you'll need a good amount of clearance to work under the car, so best raise it up and get the space needed to use these type of tools. There's likely a circlip holding it into the tranny. Just use the pry bar on a GOOD spots to snap it out. EDIT: Be careful not to frack up the axle seal in the tranny using the pry bar.
