I bought a pack of steel wool that went from coarse to fine. Put some finer stuff on the bottom, and the coarse stuff closer to the intake side. Worked great for me.

I would prefer to attach it to the intake pipe so you also get some vacuum happening in the valve cover, but for the 1g, I'll probably just have a breather.
